It is with the heaviest of hearts that I share this devastating news with you. Our sweet Atlas passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last Saturday. She developed labored breathing, and despite our best efforts, we lost her on the way to the vet.
Not knowing how she died, our fears for the other cats led us to have a necropsy performed. The results revealed that Atlas died from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic heart condition. This diagnosis was all the more shocking given her clean bill of health from her November echocardiogram.
While no cause of death could ever ease our suffering, this diagnosis raises fears for the well-being of Atlas’ relatives, and I know will cause concern for many of you.
Please know that HCM typically progresses more slowly than how it did in this case, and can often be detected through regular echocardiograms. If you have a cat related to Atlas, or Jade, I strongly urge you to prioritize their heart health with yearly or bi-yearly echos.
There is hope, research into new medications looks promising for managing HCM, but for us, the pain of losing Atlas is too great to continue our breeding program. Our two remaining girls are Atlas’ grandchildren and breeding them is a risk I am unwilling to take. We’ve encountered HCM before but never in one of our breeding cats. The impact of this is especially devastating.
My thoughts are with each of you, and I pray that you never have to endure this kind of pain. If you do, please know that I’m here for you, and we will walk through it together.
Thanks to our amazing veterinarian, Dr. Marcia Carpenter, Atlas’ DNA will be studied by Dr. Leslie Lyons at the University of Missouri along with her close relatives. We have high hopes that their DNA will help Dr. Lyons identify one of the genes that produces HCM in Scottish cats, so one day, a simple DNA test can detect if a cat has the genetic makeup to develop and produce Scottish cats with HCM.
Atlas was a shining example of kindness and gentleness. Her wholehearted love and affection brought joy and serenity into our home, touching all of us. We will miss her forever.
