We just got this news from CDFA. Make sure your equine friends are vaccinate for West Nile Virus 🐎

"The first case of equine WNV has been confirmed for 2016. A thoroughbred mare met case definition with neurologic signs and a positive IgM Capture ELISA test for West Nile Virus. The positive horse is located in San Diego County. The unvaccinated five (5) year-old mare is alive and recovering slowly."

West Nile Virus season is just starting with this year's first four confirmed equine cases in California.

Two of the four West Nile positive horses were here in Riverside County. Please make sure your horses are vaccinated.

This was one of the highlights of my 2014.
On the left: A one day old mini donkey rejected by his mother and in critical condition.
On the right: 10 days later - he's alive and well - after IV fluids, plasma, and 5 days with a feeding tube. :-)

Recent Equine Dental Case:
This rescue horse presented with a chronic wound on the cheek (see small corner pic).
Closer inspection revealed that the wound originated from inside of the mouth (see white arrow) and was produced by a large, sharp hook on his first cheek tooth (see yellow arrow).

We rounded off the hook and he's healing well :-)
