Veterinary Medical Center has some exciting news to share! The staff at VMC are proud to announce that Dr. Sheila has been voted Favorite Veterinarian of Calloway County for 2026! Dr. Sheila has owned and operated VMC since 2023 and has worked tirelessly to serve her community as the last privately owned veterinary practice in Calloway County. Dr. Sheila prioritizes providing quality medicine and personalized veterinary experiences to her patients and clients. She is a fearless leader with a generous heart, and the members of her staff feel blessed to work alongside her at VMC. Dr. Sheila—the epitome of an extraordinary leader—guides us with integrity and enthusiasm. She possesses all the qualities of an exceptional veterinarian: intelligence, compassion, communication, and the ability to work under pressure. Dr. Sheila skillfully balances her roles as practice owner, doctor, wife, mother, and friend.

🎉VET TECH APPRECIATION WEEK🎉

From Dr. Sheila:

"The staff at VMC are the unsung heroes of what we do each day. They go before me and they follow behind, helping to create a personalized visit for each and every patient we see.
But aside from their "work", these people are out serving our community in ways most would never even know about.

This past year I've seen them: rescue stray animals from the highway, do welfare checks on seniors (humans), drive people to pick up groceries, shovel snow off walkways and sidewalks for people who couldn't, participate in charity auctions, coach rec league soccer, and there's really no telling what other "goodness" they have put into the world.
None of them sought recognition for any of this and they may not like that I'm telling you here. But I'll shout from the mountaintops about how amazing the people who show up for me, our clients, and patients are on any day. They're a solid group of humans and I'm thankful I get the opportunity to work with them every day.

We use this week to recognize every role at VMC. In veterinary clinics like ours, you may be answering a phone while you also hold a dog for a**l glands. No job is too big or small.
But you're in great hands with our FIVE Murray State graduates, including Kasey, who leads the tech team as our LVT.
Please help me tell them "thank-you" for all they do!" ❤️🐾

Some heroes had four legs. 🐾❤️

In September 2001, a two-year-old Golden Retriever named Bretagne arrived at Ground Zero with her handler, Denise Corliss. It was her first deployment, and for 10 straight days, she worked 12-hour shifts on the smoking rubble of the Twin Towers, searching for survivors alongside roughly 300 other rescue dogs from across the country.

They found almost no one alive. But Bretagne's presence gave something just as vital to the exhausted firefighters and rescue workers around her. Time and again, they would stop what they were doing just to kneel down and pet her—a moment of comfort in the middle of unimaginable devastation. Sometimes a dog's greatest work isn't measured in lives rescued, but in hearts held.

Bretagne went on to serve for years afterward, deploying to Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita before retiring at age 9. In her later years, she became a beloved reading companion for elementary school children, listening patiently as they practiced reading aloud.

On June 6, 2016, at age 16, Bretagne was euthanized in Cypress, Texas. Nearly 30 firefighters lined the path to the veterinary clinic to salute her one final time, and an American flag was draped over her body. She was the last known surviving search dog from 9/11—a quiet hero who never wore a uniform but earned every bit of the honor she received. Her legacy reminds us that some dogs change the world not through fanfare, but through steady, humble devotion to those who need them most.

Microchips are proven to reunite more pets with their families!

On , we're sharing a few important reminders on the importance of microchips:
➡ 1 in 3 family pets will get lost
➡ Microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners and microchipped cats are more than 20 times as likely to be returned to their owners

And remember, while microchips greatly increase the chances that pets will be reunited with their families if they are lost or stolen, a microchip only works if its registration information is up-to-date and accurate. Visit avma.org/CheckTheChip to learn more.

Please see Sam's story below. Sam's family had him current on Rabies vaccine which may have saved his life and his family a great deal of heartache.

When we harp on the importance of Rabies vaccination, this is one situation we are trying to protect both you and your pets from.

This one is close to home and exposure can happen without your pet ever leaving the house! ❤️

My name is Sam. I played with a bat that tested positive for rabies, in my backyard here in Trigg County! I was vaccinated for rabies at TCVC prior to this incident though so me and my family are happy and healthy!

Be like Sam and stay up to date on your rabies vaccines for dogs and cats. It could save them and your family a lot of heartache!
