Let’s talk a little bit about cold weather and colostrum in newborn calves (some of this also applies to other ruminants like lambs and goat kids). 50-60% of deaths during the first 3 days of life are a result of dystocia (difficult birth), starvation, and hypothermia. Newborn calves arrive with a wet hide and a high surface area to mass ratio, so lose their body heat quickly. The majority of healthy mammals generate heat by shivering – burning energy to generate heat – and newborns have a very small amount of stored energy.

We all know that colostrum is essential to keep calves alive by giving them the antibodies and other factors to fight off infectious diseases. Colostrum becomes increasingly important in cold weather in that it warms the calf from the inside and provides critical energy for the calf to keep itself warm. This energy also helps keep the calf alive by providing glucose for the brain to function and develop!

A thermometer is a useful tool to have in your kit. Some of the parameters for monitoring newborns are listed below. If you have a calf that is “abnormal” in one or more of these areas, it might be time to intervene!

Re**al Temperature: 101-103⁰ F
Heart Rate: 100-150 Beats per minute
Respirations: Regular
Gums: Pink
Activity:
Begins head-righting within minutes
Sits upright in 5 minutes
Attempts to stand in 15 minutes
Stands in 1 hour
Nursing in 2 hours

When a calf is chilled, everything slows down and a dose of high quality, warm colostrum is a good start to becoming a healthy calf.

We would like to thank all of our awesome clients for your patience through this crazy winter and busy spring! Between emergencies, weather delays, the usual herd work, and some odd cases, things got hectic! Now on to some summertime fun while praying for rain to keep our pastures and hay fields growing.

We are in the heart of ultrasound season!

You can get a lot of information by using an ultrasound to preg check your cattle. Ultrasounding is most useful during the first 30 - 90 days of gestation. This is when we get the best images and measurements of the fetus. One of the most common ways we use this information is to use the size of the fetus to determine when the cow/heifer was bred and give the owner an approxomate due date so that they can better sort their herd during calving season.

If you have any questions about the process, please call or stop in to the office!
