CSI KY stands with our Eastern Kentucky search and rescue partners in supporting Senate Bill 47- the in-the-line-of-duty death benefit bill.

Every time rescue teams go out, they put their lives on the line to save others. Right now, if something were to happen to a rescue team member in the line of duty, their family could receive little to no state support. Senate Bill 47 would correct that by extending the same death benefits currently provided to other first responders to include paid and volunteer search and rescue personnel.

We appreciate lawmakers who recognize this overdue need and urge the Kentucky General Assembly to pass this bill, because every life saved should be honored, and every sacrifice should be supported.

Sen. Matthew Deneen, who is sponsoring the bill, noted that search & rescue squads play a critical role in saving lives. He said providing them the same line-of-duty death benefits as other re…

🐾 K9 Alice 🐾
End of Watch
July 3, 2014 - February 17, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of K9 Alice.

Alice served with dedication, grit, and heart as a Search and Rescue K9. Throughout her career, she deployed alongside her handler, Celia, answering the call to search for the missing and bring answers to families in need. She trained hard, worked with intensity, and exemplified the determination and drive that define a true SAR K9.

Alice was more than a working dog. She was a teammate. A partner. A protector. A steady presence on training days and deployments. Known for her intelligence, sass, and sweet nature, she left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege to work beside her.

We extend our deepest condolences to Alice’s family and of course, Celia, who walked every mile of this journey with unwavering devotion and love. The bond between a handler and K9 partner is profound, and we honor the years of commitment, sacrifice, and service they gave together.

K9 Alice’s watch has ended, but her impact on this team and the families she served will not be forgotten.

Rest easy, Alice.
We’ll take it from here.

🐾K9 Whiskey🐾

From Lexie: "My 'side of the road specials'. 💜🐾

Thank you, Amanda, for submitting Whiskey’s story.

Whiskey was a hot mess when I found him limping down the side of the road. He tried to bite me the whole time I was trying to catch him, but he must have sensed my stubbornness (probably because it matched his 😅). Once home, he was reactive and even resource guarded water bowls - but he’s come a long way. I had wanted to do Search and Rescue for years, but it wasn’t until I joined CSI KY that I was able to truly jump in.

Through this work, I’ve met some of the most incredible humans and K9s. Not only on our team, but across other SAR teams as well. The support, dedication, and heart in this community is something really special.

While it’s pretty amazing to see Whiskey on TV (and I hope to be as cool as him someday 😄), the most important takeaway for me is this: we are a free resource. Our team is dispatched through Kentucky Emergency Management, and it is never too soon to call. We would much rather have our dogs loaded and on the way - only to turn around because your loved one was found safe - than to be called too late.

Thank you to everyone who shared and supported Whiskey and Otis's story. 💜🐾"

🐾 K9 Otis 🐾

Otis was a stray found by his handler, Lexie, in the summer of ’23 and it didn’t take long to realize he was meant for more.

When Otis first started in Search and Rescue, the plan was for him to work HRD. Turns out… that just wasn’t his passion. He could honestly take it or leave it. It was Teresa who noticed something important, Otis was naturally trailing in whoever hid the source. Maybe, she suggested, trailing was his thing. And that’s when Otis found his jam.

Otis certified through KYEM in March of last year and hasn’t looked back since. Give him a scent, and he’s all business - focused, determined, and doing exactly what he was born to do.

When he’s not working, Otis is full time chaos coordinator. He loves stirring up trouble with his brothers and sisters at home, howling at any kitty he spots, and absolutely convincing Lexie that every outing requires a pup cup stop. ☕️

We’re proud to have Otis working as part of CSI KY. Nose down, tail up, and heart fully in the job.

Dogs of CSI KY!
🐾 K9 Goose 🐾

Goose was born in Virginia from Thompson Border Collies, but his real story began when he and Christy chose each other. The match was instant. Though Christy had been warned that Border Collies can be “too smart for their handlers,” Goose took it easy on his new family and seemed to take Virginia’s state motto, "Virginia is for lovers" to heart.

Goose is an extremely sensitive and caring Border Collie who can read a room as well as he can smell a victim. He lives to work… and to fetch tennis balls. His drive to please and complete tasks is evident from the moment he wakes until he’s sprawled across the human’s bed at the end of the day.

When Goose isn’t working or training, he keeps a quiet watch over many dog and cat housemates. It’s in his nature to give up his own toys for another dog or to groom a cat, whether that cat asked for it or not. If one of the household animals is injured, Goose will not let them out of his sight. This innate concern for others is a large part of why Search and Rescue is such a natural fit for him.

His strongest asset may be the bond he shares with his handler, built on trust, communication, and a shared commitment to the work. When his work harness goes on, Goose doesn’t lose his compassion - his focus sharpens. He understands there is a job to be done, and he approaches that work with purpose, heart, and unwavering dedication.

🐾 K9 Gracie 🐾

🎉 Miss Gracie recently celebrated her 2nd birthday on December 23rd! 🎂🐾
Gracie is a Border Collie / Kelpie mix with energy, drive, and heart to match.
She passed her KYEM air-scent certification at just 10 months old and is currently advancing her training in scent-specific air scenting. Gracie is also trained in Human Remains Detection (HRD).

Handled by Sharon, Gracie is a talented young K9 with a bright future ahead. Watch her grow up through these photos - from a wee tiny pup at eight weeks old to a confident working K9!
We’re proud to have this team as part of CSI KY!

Happy (belated) Birthday, Gracie! 🐾🎉
