🚨 Skunked?! Don’t Panic. 🚿🦨

If your pet had an unfortunate run-in with a skunk, resist the urge to reach for the tomato juice — there’s a better solution!

The right cleaning combo can make a big difference, and we’ve got the go-to skunk spray removal recipe in the graphic below.

⚠️ Remember:
• Avoid getting the solution in your pet’s eyes, ears, or mouth
• Don’t store the mixture — it’s meant to be used fresh
• Call your vet if your pet was sprayed directly in the face or is acting abnormally

The cat breed in this week's Pet Puzzler is the Scottish Fold! 🐱✨

Did you guess it right? Here are some fun facts about these sweet, round-faced felines:

🔹 Signature Ears: Their iconic folded ears are caused by a natural genetic mutation, giving them a unique and adorable look. 🌀👂
🔹 Owl-Like Appearance: With their big, round eyes and compact bodies, Scottish Folds are often said to resemble owls! 🦉
🔹 Laid-Back Companions: They’re known for their calm, affectionate personalities and often enjoy lounging in quirky positions—like the famous “sit up” pose. 🛋️
🔹 All Folds Start Straight: Kittens are actually born with straight ears—if they’re going to fold, it typically starts around 3 to 4 weeks of age!

☀️ Summer Safety Series - Hiking with Pets

Before you embark on a fun-filled day of hiking, be sure to keep the following tips in mind.

Don’t Forget:
💧 WATER
🐕 P**P BAGS
🍖 TREATS
⛰️ PET BOOTIES
💚 LEASH

1. Visit Your Veterinarian - Be sure your pet is up-to-date on all shots as well as flea and tick preventatives. Always confirm with your family veterinarian that your pet is healthy enough for hiking.

2. Research - Always make sure that the area you are hiking in allows pets. It is also important to take note of what type of animals and flowers are present near the trails you plan to explore. Many wild plants can be poisonous to pets and certain wildlife can pose a threat to our pets.

3. Microchipping and ID Tags - Has your pet’s microchip and ID tag been updated? Summer is a big season for lost pets for a variety of reasons, so it is important to have preventatives in place before you go hiking. Pets can get very excited with all the new sights and smells, and their curiosity may cause them to wander more than usual!

🍫 It’s World Chocolate Day! 🍫

There’s one kind of chocolate we do approve of… the kind with a wagging tail and floppy ears. 🐶💛 Shoutout to all the sweet Chocolate Labs out there making our lives better (and definitely not toxic)!

But remember: while the pup in the photo is totally safe to snuggle, the edible kind of chocolate is dangerous for dogs. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, increased heart rate, or seizures—especially darker varieties.

So today, treat yourself—but stash those sweets out of paw’s reach. Your dog will be just as happy with a walk, a game of fetch, or a crunchy (canine-approved) snack. 🦴

🐾 Keep them indoors during fireworks
🎇 Create a calm, quiet space if they’re anxious

Premier Veterinary Group – Mundelein is expanding access to emergency care with new extended weekend hours. We are now open from Friday at 7:00 AM through early Tuesday morning at 1:00 AM, offering continuous emergency coverage throughout the weekend.

Our experienced emergency team is available around the clock to provide urgent, compassionate care when pets and their families need it most. Whether it's late at night or during a busy weekend afternoon, we're here to support you with advanced veterinary care and a steadfast commitment to your pet’s well-being.

☀️ Summer Safety Series - Boating with Dogs 🚤 🐶

✅ Life Jackets: Just like us, pups need life jackets too! Ensure they have one that fits snugly and keep it on throughout the trip.
✅ Hydration Station: Bring plenty of fresh water for your pup to drink. An insulated, portable water bottle that comes with a bowl, for example, is easy to carry and keeps your dog’s water cold.
✅ Paw Protection: Hot surfaces like boat decks can burn sensitive paw pads. Consider paw wax or booties to protect their precious paws.
✅ Sun Protection: Dogs can get sunburned too! Apply pet-safe sunscreen to exposed areas, especially on lighter fur.
✅ Supervision: Always keep an eye on your furry friend. Even strong swimmers can get tired or disoriented in open water.

Meet Dr. Miller! 🩺🐾

She started her veterinary journey working with cattle and horses in Montana and Tennessee after earning her DVM from Auburn University. While she began in large animal medicine, Dr. Miller discovered her true passion in emergency care for small animals. Her special interests include ultrasound, internal medicine, and managing critical cases — and we're lucky to have her on the Premier Mundelein team! 💙
