Good morning my Lucky Dog peeps! It’s FREEEEZING 🥶 out there! I’m making the executive decision to reschedule all appointments for the day. If you have an appointment with me today, please check your phone as I have reached out to let you know! We are expecting bad weather, stay home and stay safe!
DID YOU KNOW????
Small dogs, thin dogs, very young, old, or sick dogs lose body heat faster and are less able to regulate temperature.
While Northern breeds like Huskies thrive in cold, short-haired breeds like Greyhounds or Bulldogs are highly susceptible to freezing temperatures.
Signs of hypothermia: Look for intense shivering, lethargy, muscle stiffness, confusion, and cold/pale, grey, or blue skin (frostbite).
WINTER SAFETY TIPS
Keep Inside: Pets should be kept indoors, with limited time outside during freezing temperatures.
Dry Paws: Clean and dry paws after walks to remove salt, which can irritate pads.
Coats/Sweaters: Short-haired dogs often need a coat or sweater for protection.
Hydration: Ensure pets have constant access to water, as dry air and indoor heating can cause dehydration.
Hidden Dangers: Antifreeze smells and tastes sweet to dogs but is highly toxic; it often spills on driveways.
Physical Changes: Dogs burn more calories in cold weather to stay warm.
Outdoor Pets: If a dog lives primarily outdoors, they need a dry, elevated, and insulated shelter.
