We have posted many times, many different ways. WE CANNOT HOUSE FERAL CATS. AT ALL. If you come to the shelter with feral cats in traps etc you will be referred to our next feral date for dropping them off.
This past week while handling a feral cat Angie, our office manager was attacked while wearing proper PPE to handle fractious cats. Proper protocol was followed and the cat was able to bite through the gloves. This caused a massive infection on her hand, and she is going to a surgeon tomorrow to have her hand lanced, cleaned out etc. We will not continue risking our staff and volunteers. This is the 3rd time in 1 year one of us has been seriously injured. Our first concern is safety of humans and animals however when we have tried all PPE and still cannot keep us safe, we have to do what we can to make things safe for us.
A feral cat is an unsocialized outdoor cat who has either never had any physical contact with humans, or human contact has diminished over enough time that she is no longer accustomed to it.
If you have a large cat colony in your neighborhood i suggest getting some neighbors together and doing a "Community cat fund" to help cover the cost of spaying/neutering the neighborhood colony through Animal Advocates For Marion County, SC only $45 to FULLY VET!
The feral cat problem in marion county is not something that just started, prior to myself taking over the shelter there was NO type of program to assist with ferals therefore they have been multiplying by the hundreds for years all over marion county. We currently have a waiting list of 15+ colonies of 10+ cats each for this program. We are doing what we can and keeping everyone (furbabies included) SAFE!
Therefore, effective immediately we will not house feral cats unless for our community cat program. If you show up with cats in traps you will be given this information and have to wait for the next appointment. THE CATS WILL NOT BE LEFT HERE WE WILL NOT HOUSE THEM!
If you are in volunteering to help with this program reach out! We are looking for someone to oversee this program.
If you are needing assistance with feral cats you can contact us to be put on the list to get FREE TNR. (waiting list is atleast 2 months)
If you would like to get the feral cats in your neighborhood fixed you can reach out to the Animal Advocates For Marion County, SC for more information on their TNR pricing and availability.
The overwhelming animal population in not only Marion County but surrounding counties is a community problem. We must work together for a solution; we cannot do this on our own.
Please consider donating to Support Our Shelter Marion, SC whom funds our current TNR program.
