Let’s talk about thrush 🤢
With spring in full effect you may see (or smell) thrush popping up everywhere in your horses down south here.
What is thrush??
Thrush is a bacterial or fungal infection in the frog of the hoof. It’s black, smelly, and can cause some pretty uncomfortable issues for our beloved horses. If thrush is not treated early it can spread to the sensitive areas of the hoof and really mess with your next trail ride attempt.
What causes thrush??
Well, because thrush is a bacterial or fungal infection, you can imagine that it grows in warm, damp, dirty environments. And that’s exactly the case. Think about it this way; it’s spring time, your horse is out in the wet, muddy paddock, standing in mud up to its fetlocks. BINGO! Prime breeding grounds for thrush to invade.
How do I treat it?
Although there is no way to prevent thrush (even horses kept in immaculate conditions will be seen with thrush from time to time) there are a few ways to fight it.
1️⃣ Clean out your horses hooves DAILY! Doing this will not allow the bacteria to grow because it does not have time to breed and multiply.
2️⃣ iodine (thrush buster)! I use thrush buster nearly every day and I recommend and sell it to my clients. It is the best way that I have found to fight thrush other than keeping the hoof clean, picked out, and dry.
3️⃣ bleach water! Yes, you read that right. Bleach water has been used for years to fight the infection and is proven to work well in most cases!
We farriers do our best to recognize and treat thrush in a horse the second we come in contact with it but it is very important that you as a horse owner are doing your part to fight it as well!
HAPPY TRAILS! And keep those hooves clean!
