Knight Veterinary Clinic will be closed Friday, July 3rd in observance of the Independence Day holiday weekend.

🐾 Refill medications before the holiday

🚨 NEW WORLD SCREWWORM ALERT 🚨

The New World Screwworm (NWS) has recently been detected in the United States, making awareness and prevention more important than ever. This parasite can affect all warm-blooded animals, including horses, cattle, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, wildlife, and even people.

🪰 What is a Screwworm?
The adult fly lays eggs in open wounds, surgical sites, navels of newborn animals, or other moist areas. Once hatched, the larvae (maggots) burrow into living tissue and feed on the animal, causing painful and rapidly worsening wounds.

⚠️ Signs to Watch For:
• Wounds that are not healing
• Foul odor from a wound
• Excessive licking or irritation
• Visible maggots in a wound
• Swelling, pain, or tissue damage
• Depression, weight loss, or decreased appetite

✅ The Good News: Early Detection is Treatable
Treatment typically involves:
• Removal of larvae from the wound
• Thorough wound cleaning and debridement
• Medications to kill remaining larvae
• Antibiotics and pain management when needed
• Ongoing wound care and monitoring by your veterinarian

📋 Idaho Entry Requirements
Due to the threat of New World Screwworm, Idaho has implemented additional import requirements for susceptible warm-blooded animals entering the state from affected areas. Owners transporting livestock, horses, pets, or other animals should verify current requirements before travel. Requirements may include health certificates, inspections, and documentation confirming the animal is free of screwworm infestation.

🐾 How You Can Help Protect Your Animals
• Check animals regularly for wounds.
• Keep wounds clean and protected.
• Seek veterinary attention promptly for wounds that are not healing normally.
• Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice maggots or suspicious wound infestations.

Fireworks season is just around the corner! If your pet experiences anxiety or fear during fireworks, now is the time to prepare.

Many pets benefit from prescription medications to help keep them calm and comfortable during the holiday. However, an examination may be required before medications can be prescribed, and appointment availability can fill quickly as the Fourth of July approaches.

🐾 Schedule your pet’s exam as soon as possible if you think they may need anxiety medication.
🐾 Refill requests should also be submitted early to avoid last-minute delays.
🐾 Don’t wait until the holiday weekend—plan ahead to help your pet stay safe and stress-free.

Knight Veterinary Clinic will have a station set up at the Elks Lodge for anyone affected by the fire who may be in need of pet supplies.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we have pet food, treats, leashes, collars, bedding, and other pet essentials available. If your family or pets have been impacted, please stop by and take what you need.

If your pet needs medication refills, prescription diets, or any supplies for the long weekend, please contact us and pick them up before closing today to ensure your pets are covered through the holiday weekend.

If your pet experiences an emergency while we are closed, please contact your nearest emergency veterinary facility.

🌾 Cheat Grass Season is Here! 🌾

As the weather warms up, we’re starting to see more pets affected by cheat grass (foxtails) — and these little grass awns can cause BIG problems.

Cheat grass seeds are sharp and barbed, allowing them to burrow into:
• Ears
• Eyes
• Noses
• Paws
• Skin
• Even deeper into the body if left untreated

⚠️ Signs to watch for:
🐾 Excessive licking or chewing at paws
👂 Head shaking or pawing at ears
👃 Sneezing or nasal discharge
👁 Squinting, redness, or eye discharge
🩹 Swelling, redness, or draining tracts in the skin
😣 Sudden pain or limping after being outdoors

After hikes, walks, or time in tall dry grass:
✔️ Check between toes
✔️ Inspect ears and eyes
✔️ Brush through fur thoroughly
✔️ Remove any visible awns immediately

The sooner cheat grass is found, the easier (and less painful) treatment usually is. If your pet is showing any of these signs, give us a call so we can help before it becomes a bigger issue.
