Directions - Put on protective gear, gloves, respirator, and long clothing. Use a tote to mix the ingredients. Start with the salt and then grade the zote into the salt and stir. Then mix in the sodas, and finally the borax.
If you want to grate the zote to a finer part, let the soap bars sit out for a few weeks to harden up. We found it doesn't matter if they are in larger or smaller chunks. The salt will take the moisture out of the soap over time anyway shrinking the zote chips.
Safety Precautions: This homemade laundry soap contains Zote, borax, baking soda, Epsom salt, and super washing soda. Wear gloves when handling ingredients to avoid skin irritation, and mix in a well-ventilated area. Store in a labeled, airtight container away from children and pets. Test on a small fabric piece before use, especially for sensitive skin or delicate fabrics. Ensure compatibility with your washing machine, particularly HE models. Do not ingest or mix with other cleaners like bleach. Follow the recipe exactly, and use at your own risk. Consult clothing care labels and seek medical advice if needed.

A Brief History of Laundry:
Laundry has evolved dramatically through history! In ancient times, people washed clothes by hand in rivers or streams, using rocks to scrub dirt and natural soaps like ash or animal fats. The Romans used fermented urine as a cleaning agent due to its ammonia content. By the Middle Ages, laundry was done with lye-based soaps made from wood ash and fat, often in communal wash houses. The 19th century introduced washboards and early mechanical washing machines, powered by hand or foot. By the early 20th century, commercial soaps and electric washing machines revolutionized laundry, but many still relied on homemade recipes similar to ours. Today, we’re returning to those roots with DIY laundry soap, combining historical simplicity with modern safety and eco-awareness!
