This Week’s Topic: Overweight Pets
We’re seeing a growing number of overweight dogs and cats—and it’s heartbreaking. Many pet owners mistakenly believe their pets should eat the same way humans do, but that’s not the case.
Some dogs can eat freely and never gain weight, while others will eat themselves sick if allowed. Unfortunately, an overweight pet is not just a “chunky” pet—it’s an unhealthy one. Excess weight shortens their lifespan, strains their joints, stresses their organs, and reduces their overall quality of life.
Maintaining a healthy weight not only adds years to your pet’s life but also helps them move more comfortably and reduces their risk of health issues down the road.
From small breeds to large, I’ve managed to maintain ideal body condition by following consistent feeding guidelines—using a measuring cup, not a random scoop or mug. Here’s a general guide:
• 1–10 lbs: ¼ cup per day
• 10–20 lbs: ½ – 1 cup per day
• 20–50 lbs: 2 – 2.5 cups per day
• 50–80 lbs: 3.5 – 4 cups per day
• 80–100+ lbs: 5 – 6 cups per day
Keep in mind, spayed or neutered pets require about 30% less food due to reduced metabolism. This is a common cause of post-surgery weight gain that many owners aren’t aware of.
Adjust portions based on your pet’s activity level, body condition, and whether they are intact or fixed. Consistency is key!
We hope this helps—and we’d love to hear your thoughts.
