So true
Gas Money… A post for non-rescuers
You found a litter of kittens in your backyard… or a stray cat… or maybe you have several cats and the numbers are growing! You don’t know what to do, so you look for help – and you find an independent rescuer who offers to help! They come out to assess what is going on, bring traps, bring food for the traps, and blankets/towels… they trap the cats, get them fixed and vaccinated, then either bring them back-keep them to find them homes -or help you get them into a shelter/rescue. Aren’t they wonderful?
Yes! Independent rescuers truly are lifesavers. Shelters and rescues can’t do it all, and so many times laypeople just don’t know what to do. Without these volunteers, both the cats AND the humans would be up a creek!
Here’s the thing… the majority of independent rescuers are volunteers. Everything they do is coming out of THEIR pocket. While some will ask for a donation to help, many will not – and as resources for even getting the cats altered dry up, these rescuers are bearing the burden. If YOU ask for help for the cats who have shown up in your area, please – consider offering to help in any way you can. One thing so many don’t even consider is how much it costs simply to drive to your house! Gas prices are out of sight and going higher – how many trips has that rescuer made to your home? Can you help them out with some gas money? When you go shopping, could you pick up a case of canned cat food? Nursing moms and kittens eat A LOT OF FOOD… and while some would like to see all cats get “premium” food, those taking in large numbers of cats cannot afford to feed $2/can – plus, cats who have scavenged for food need to not start on a super rich diet. A donation of any food will be appreciated.
A donation of any kind is an incredible help – not only in dollars, but emotional support. Rescuers are often taken for granted – please, if you are asking for help, remember they are doing this because they care, not because they “have to”. Knowing they are appreciated makes the day a little brighter
