So, you need to surrender a litter of puppies or kittens? Before contacting your local shelter, ask yourself what you have done to rehome your pets.
First and foremost, have you spayed the mother of the litter to prevent future unwanted babies? Don’t forget neutering the dad!
Have you vetted the babies at all? First shots are easily purchased from your local feed stores.
Have you posted your pets on social media?
What adoption events have you taken your babies to? Have you set up anywhere to give your babies away?
Are you willing to pay a surrender fee? Keep in mind that housing your pet is not cheap. Assuming that you have not vetted your pet at all will cost tax payers anywhere from $75 to $200 for initial vaccines, surgery, and flea/tick prevention.
The Mt. Vernon Animal Shelter is here to help you with your needs. However, we highly encourage you to do everything you can to rehome your pets yourself. We understand that often times you are held responsible for the pets being dumped or abandoned in your area. We know life events happen. We acknowledge that life is difficult and you only want is best for the animal. But please know, our list is long for surrender pets. We seriously do not want to euthanize due to limited space. We are only able to accept animals if we have the capacity for care. That means that we only have a limited amount of space, resources, and man power. We would like to save them all, but you must also be willing to do your part.
