What Dog Sport or Activity is Right for Me and My Dog?

When I started showing dogs 40 years ago, our choices were limited: Obedience, Field Trials, and Herding. A few breed-specific options existed—like Mushing or Protection sports—but that was it.

Fast forward to today, the list is amazing: Obedience, Rally, Agility, Scentwork, Tricks, Treiball, Disc Dog, Dock Diving, Flyball, Freestyle, Tracking, Lure Coursing—and more! Even better, we now have video titling options, perfect for dogs and handlers who prefer training at home.

For example, my dog Tommy thrives in sports like Agility, Rally, and Tracking, but I don’t put him in Obedience since “Stand for Exam” causes him stress. My other dog, Trek, shines in Obedience—we even earned a CDX title together!

The lesson I’ve learned: I pick sports that enrich my dogs’ lives, not ones that risk stress or injury. That’s why I call myself the Sport Dog Ally—I match dogs to activities where they can truly shine.

I’ve titled dogs in Obedience, Agility, Rally, Tracking, IPO, and TEAM. What makes me unique as an instructor? I don’t lock into one sport—I look at each dog’s temperament and help them find their best fit.
