Preventing unwanted litters is a goal we all share—but it's time to rethink the surgical approach. Hysterectomies and vasectomies, which preserve hormonal balance, can safely be performed as early as 8 weeks of age, making dogs sterile without disrupting their natural hormones.

In this study, researchers looked at whether the age at which dogs were spayed or neutered, meaning how long they were exposed to their natural s*x hormones, affected how healthy they were in old age. They studied a group of long-lived pet dogs to learn what helps dogs live longer, healthier lives. Dogs with the fewest age-related health problems were considered the most “robust.”

The results showed that both male and female dogs who kept their hormones longer (i.e., were spayed or neutered later) were 3 to 10 times more likely to be healthy in old age compared to those altered earlier. Once hormone exposure and age were taken into account, there was no difference in old-age health between males and females.

This study highlights how important s*x hormones may be for staying healthy later in life and shows that early-life decisions—like when to spay or neuter—can have long-term effects on health.

Thinking About “Just One Litter”? Please Read This First.

We hear it all the time—
“I just want one litter with my husky. Just for the experience. Just once.”

But before you move forward, please ask yourself this:

🔹 Have both parents passed their OFA hip certifications?
🔹 Are their eyes cleared through OFA?
🔹 Have they been genetically tested for SHPN1 and SPS1?
These aren’t extra, they’re essentials. Skipping them puts puppies at risk of painful, life-altering conditions. If you’re bringing puppies into the world, don’t they deserve the best possible chance at a healthy future?

💉 What if something goes wrong?
Are you financially and emotionally prepared for an emergency c-section? What if a puppy needs emergency vet care? What if something happens to your mom that you just wanted that one litter from?

🍼 Raising a litter takes round-the-clock dedication. Cleaning constantly. Weighing puppies. Socializing. Providing early training, exposure, and enrichment. No vacations. No days off.

🐾 Then comes the hardest part of all: Finding the right homes.
Not just homes that want a puppy, homes prepared to care for a high-energy, intelligent breed for 12–15 years.
Homes that understand the husky escape artistry, vocal opinions, grooming needs, and their need for structure and companionship.
And most importantly, are you ready to be there if one of those puppies ever needs to come back? Because responsible breeding doesn’t end at 8 weeks old.

Breeding just once might seem simple, but it’s anything but.
Please don’t do it just for the experience, do it only if you’re willing to do it the right way. With planning, testing, commitment, and heart.

Our huskies deserve no less. 💙
