I get asked all the time if my shoeing horses is a full time job. So I thought I would elaborate on my business.
I usually get up at 5am. Leave the house between 6-7am drive 30mins to 3hours to my first stop of the day. I may have one big stop for the day or 3-6 smaller stops for the day. I will usually be done by 5pm and then drive home 1-3 hours, because my last stop of the day will be the farthest from home. I average 30,000 miles a year on my truck.
Have 350-400 horses that I try to keep on a 6 week schedule during the summer, and 8-10 week schedule in the winter. I work 5-6 days a week in the summer time. I haven't taken a vacation in 9 years.
Of the horses I do, about 40 %of the horses get trims only, about 35% get front shoes and hinds trimmed and the other 25% get a full set of shoes.
If I get injured I have to mend quick so I don't get to far behind. I tore a tendon in my arm this year and wrenched my back bad enough that I had to go to medical.
I am the business book keeper, administrator, resupply coordinator and I have to keep track of all the messages that come in by text, voicemail, Facebook messenger and on the home phone answering machine.
People tell me that I get to make my own schedule, I wish. My schedule has to accommodate many factors and also accommodate all my clients schedules.
So yes, I only have to work half a day if I want too. It's just a matter of deciding which 12 hours of the day that I want to work.
