Tempo earned her first two points towards her conformation championship this weekend in NJ!!

It was a family reunion as well, A couple of her brothers also earned two points, a third went reserve and her mom was BOB on Sunday!

The dragon’s first snow!! At five weeks these guys got both their first taste of the outdoors AND snow and they took to it like…. Well… Malamutes to snow 😅😁

The two long coats, Andarna and Toothless, are available. Send me a pm if you are interested, but know we are very careful about placing pups.

Since they have their puppy teeth now and we’re VERY interested in mom’s food, we introduced meat and kibble a couple days ago and they are big fans.

I find weaning onto raw or a partial raw diet to be very easy on the pups and they take to it right away. I can skip the watery mush portion and that also makes it so much cleaner. Reika is still feeding them as well, and will be for a couple more weeks or so. 😊

Three week old pictures of the Dragons litter!! 🐉 Everyone’s eyes and ears are open and they are ravenous. Reika is a great mom and super attentive, they’ll start eating mush over the next few days and she can get a break from the Hungry Ones.

If you’re interested, a couple will be looking for homes. A sport or active hiking and outdoor homes much preferred!! I expect these guys to be very intelligent and thrive in active homes.

We’re very happy to announce that Everest and Reika have had a long-awaited litter! Named after some of my favorite dragons 🐉

My best leader and sled dog Everest and best all around girl Reika. Hoping to have some performance stars and awesome active pets out of this litter.

A bit warm today, but was able to get out for a short slow run where we worked on training behaviors more than getting in shape. Warm days are good mental training days as we can’t go as fast or as far but there’s always something to work on.

This included being calm at the start and maintaining a line-out (which is new for TBD and Sig) and not circling for Arson, moving right or “gee” on the trail when asked and when people are around and a calm “whoa” and waiting for the driver to say when to go again.

Sig did amazing at the AMCA Regional weight pull on Sunday… Pulling his heart out for me and winning the pull by speed!

The top weight pulled was 3908 lbs (not a typo!!), and he did it in 25.19 sec. Getting first by 6 sec.

I neglected to post these great pictures of Tempo and I in the puppy ring at our last show. 😅. She earned best of opposite s*x to who her brother on day 1 (her brother got a group 3!) and earned a working group 1 on day 2!

Tempo gets a blowout after a bath. 😁

We work with the pups (and any adults) to get them comfortable with a full groom. It’s important for their health, our sanity (fur everywhere) and in Tempo’s case as a show dog.

These are from about a month ago, but here’s Tempo having fun as my paddle board figurehead at about 3.5 months. 😆 She loved being up front, trying to grab my paddle out of the water and trying to swim every chance she got.

Whoof on the Wharf is the best for kayaking with your pup!

Owyhee n Blackrock’s She’s Got Rhythm at Grey Wind “Tempo” is starting her show career strong!

First BPUP show at just over 4 months and she had two days of Best Puppy in Show and two days of Group 2’s (second in group).

Reika demonstrating a very useful behavior I’ve been teaching our crew called “hide”. Which is a command to get under my legs, or chair or table. Basically to get under an object to keep them out of the way.

Super useful for eating out, especially downtown where sidewalk tables can be very close together. 😁

No frivolous parts!

They couldn’t have been designed better for their environment than if they’d been drawn up by modeling software, these northern breeds of ours. The bushy tail of Malamutes, Elkhounds, Samoyeds, etc., are long enough to reach their faces and curl around their noses when they lie down to sleep. This protects their faces and provides additional warmth by trapping their breath around those face. When upright, some tails are carried over the back and to the side to provide extra protection to the kidney area.

Meanwhile, the gradual changes in the skull of a Alaskan Malamute eliminates indentations or depressions to collect snow. Staying with the Malamute for a moment, those big paws serve to distribute the dog’s weight across a greater surface area, and keep the dog’s feet from sinking into the snow, and extra fat on the foot pads (also found on the Norwegian Elkhound and Chow Chow) prevents freezing because fat doesn’t freeze as quickly as other living tissue. Combined with the tough skin covering the toe pads, frostbite leading to dead tissue can be averted.

Almond-shaped eyes (think Samoyed), enable the dog to squint and expose less of their eyeball to wind and frigid air while still being able to see.

There isn’t much that’s frivolous on a nordic breed.
