Why does my dog lick? When a dog is born the mother licks the dog immediately after birth to stimulate breathing, facilitate movement and encourage them to go to the bathroom.

Licking is also a greeting ritual and dogs will often repeat this licking behavior with more dominant dogs as well as their human parents.

When you take your dog to a new place to socialize, keep them on a leash, this helps if you are currently leash training. Walking and not being carried helps to build confidence.

If your dog hides behind your legs, shakes or starts to shrink down to the ground, it is best to ignore this behavior. By not making a fuss or coddling them, they will realize they are not getting any rewards for the insecurity. The more you take them out, the more they will become accustomed to new people and new experiences.
