Xylitol (aka birch sugar) is a sugar substitute found in sugar-free gums and peanut butter. It is interesting and frustrating in that it poses two levels of toxicity.

Within 10-15 minutes, severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can result in weakness, wobbliness, seizures, and death. It takes as little as 100mg/kg body weight, so even 1 piece of chewing gum in a small dog can prove deadly!

From 10 hrs to 3 days later (with or without hypoglycemia), acute liver necrosis can occur. Depression, vomiting and diarrhea, jaundice, bleeding issues, and death are the main clinical signs associated with the liver.

Fluids, supportive care, and liver-detoxifying medications are the mainstay of treatment. The earlier and more aggressive, the better!

The prognosis for xylitol toxicity is fair to guarded with rapid identification and treatment. As with any toxin, avoidance is the best prevention

Main roads are decent, but side roads and Main St are pure ice! I suspect that with the sub-freezing temps, they won't get much better as the day goes on. As of now, we'll be open normal hours, but it'll depend on how the roads look as the day progresses. Be careful out there!

Another day, another heartworm (positive) dog! This dog came in for coughing; the owner was afraid she had a chicken bone caught in her throat. X-rays showed an enlarged heart with the characteristic "reverse D" pattern and a lot of inflammation. So, we ran a heartworm test and...

Heartworms are carried by mosquitoes, so even indoor dogs and dogs in gated communities can contract the disease (sadly, these are actual excuses we get for declining heartworm preventives). The downfall is that arsenic-derived injections are the only definitive treatment for adult heartworms, and that stuff is expensive, plus the damage to the heart is irreversible.

Preventing heartworm disease is the best route, as it catches before the written even makes its way to the heart! Interceptor Plus and Proheart are the two products we carry, but there is an option for every budget and lifestyle!

I have included a video of a wriggling microfilaria (baby heartworm) in the comments, as I can't load videos and photos at the same time.

The bad news: Luna was confirmed Heartworm (Positive) yesterday

The good news: she's not showing any symptoms, will be treated, and is ready to curl up on the couch with her new family

As we enter the last week of January, it's getting obvious that the cold, dark season is getting the best of a lot of us. During these times, I plan my gardens, taking advantage of the numerous planting catalogs out there. The next few months bring several holidays, and with them, an increased risk of toxin exposure to our furry friends. Today, we're going to focus on cats!

Lilies are one of the MOST toxic plants for cats. Exposure to any part of the plant can cause permanent kidney failure! We'll go over a couple of the "lilies" and the risks associated with each one.

1) True lilies - Asiatic and daylilies (Lilium and Hemerocallis spp) are commonly grown in the landscape (i.e. the little yellow Stella d'Oro) and used in floral arrangements (Stargazer, Easter lilies). Ingestion of the petals, leaves, pollen, or even the water can cause an acute kidney failure. Current recommendations are to induce vomiting and treat for 3 days on IV fluids, no matter how much the cat took in.

2) Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) - commonly used as houseplants. In my experience, they are mostly associated with funerals. Insoluble oxalates cause irritation in the mouth and upper GI tract, leading to drooling, trouble eating, and possibly vomiting. The mouth heals quickly once the irritant is removed.

3) Peruvian lilies (Alstroemeria) - commonly included in floral arrangements. Overconsumption is the biggest risk of this plant, causing vomiting! A safe alternative to the true lilies and longer-lasting in arrangements

In my outdoor gardens, I have a bed of daylilies and a container of Stargazer lilies. Indoors, the peace lily lives on the upper shelf of a baker's rack; Alstroemeria are the only cut flowers allowed in the house!

Since Thanksgiving is merely a week away, the first entry in our educational series is what foods are and are not safe to share with your furry friends. Ideally, no people food is the best, but we know that you'll sneak Fluffy a bite. Moderation and safe foods are more acceptable.

Here are the 6 foods that we recommend you NEVER give:

1) grapes/raisins - can cause kidney failure to certain individuals at unknown dosages.
2) onions/garlic - members of the Allium family can cause red blood cell disorders.
3) chocolate - can cause GI upset (especially diarrhea), racing heart rate, and seizures. Dark chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate; white chocolate is NOT chocolate.
4) alcohol and yeast bread dough - can cause GI upset, bloat, and drunkeness.
5) spicy foods - can cause pancreatitis, which can range from mild vomiting and diarrhea to death.
6) xylitol (aka birch sugar) - artificial sweetener causes severe blood sugar drops (to the point of seizures and death) and liver failure

From the West Main Animal Clinic family to yours, happy Thanksgiving! Be thankful, be safe, and be kind!

Approx 2mo F dilute Torti found on Morris Blvd by Good Samaritan and brought here. FeLV/FIV (neg/neg). Pelvis displaced mildly and right hip out of place. Because she's young and she's a cat, I think she'll heal with cage rest and anti-inflammatory, but she'll need a foster to help. If any interest, please let me know ASAP. Local shelter has no fosters and limited finances to help at this time
