More progress on the quail aviary! Back wall is mostly done. Gotta fill a couple small holes with hardware cloth.

I also put a string on my chicken pen door so I can open it without going inside the grass pen.

The chickens were getting way too cramped in their little dog pen (I use them for quail brooders). So I decided to put them outside in my extra quail grow out cages until I build their coop. I put up a small roosting bar, they were jumping on their food and water in the brooder, so I think they'll figure it out. It'll keep them out of the mud if it rains, too.

I can close the pen door at night and open it so they can forage in some grass during the day.

I'm so glad I picked up these extra metal dog pens. I use them to make quail cages. Thankfully I didn't take them apart yet. They have 4' walls and a roof so they can't get out.

They're so cute exploring their new digs!

Qty 28 - 1 week old - quail for sale as unsexed straight run. This hatch has 2 white quail available. The other 26 are Normal coloring, and Fee (monotone gray of normal pattern)

Aviary update!

I now have a door!

I had found a busted up dog kennel in the trash. Well, the top and back panel were perfectly fine and worked to be a good size for this door. I reinforced the joint with lawn sign H-brackets and extra zip ties. This thing is solid! I'll be adding netting to it, but this is what I used for my other IBC Totes lawn cages and it works great for a door.

I have 2 snap clips keeping it closed and 3 pieces of pipe strapping working as hinges.

I love repurposing things in my builds!!

Hey everyone! I'm 2/3 done with my 8' x 16' grow out aviary for the roosters!!!

I've got the bulk framing, including ridge pole, all secured. This thing is a beast! Building it heavy to deal with this crazy wind.

Just need to add horizontal supports midway, make door, and then cover with mesh and tarp.

Put your TV in another room!! Go through TV withdrawal. Get productive with your time!

I just did more work in 2 hours than I ever thought possible.

Stay focused, stay consistent. You'll finally reach your goals!

What I did in 2 hours:
-move massive quail p**p pile (I need the area it was in)
-unload and organize wood
-finally made my trailer markers so I can see my trailer in the mirror

Y'all can do so much once you put your mind to it! And if you have ADHD or procrastination issues (like me) ..... Headphones. Drown out your thoughts with music. You know what to do, don't think about it anymore. Put the headphones on and get to it!

Blood work is done for the quail flock! It was the perfect temp and weather to get this done today.
Everyone tested clean, just have to wait for my official number! Then I'll be able to ship eggs!

My dad gave me some older deck boards and they worked out perfectly for putting up a quick wall for the coop. I just put the 4 week old birds outside and it was a bit too gusty.

I figured the light rain was actually a good opportunity to check out water drainage and any leaky rough issues today before I put the birds in for the spring.

I decided to use some of my feed bags to make a windbreak and then also to put on the back of one of my tower cages cuz there was a leak in the roof right at that corner joint. I tried fixing that corner joint leak and it is beyond my skills, LOL. But now the p**p trays should not get wet at all because of the feedbag backer.

I also made an awesome hillbilly gutter out of an Aldi bag, a support strap, and a wooden stake. It's free, easy, and works 😆.

Oh, and I made some drainage trenches to help control the water.

State Inspector came out to inspect the birds. Next step is the NPIP blood tests!

Also, my big incubator is almost ready for full-scale hatching! I'm getting a small fan to try to circulate the air to make the temperature more consistent.

Cleaning out brooders and rearranging everyone. ...

One of the 2 1/2 week old button quail decided to fly out of the brooder. 🫠

So now every time I walk into the enclosed porch I'm armed with a net in hopes of capturing him. 😆

I have (19) week-old straight run Coturnix Quail Chicks available at $5 each.

Price will increase once they are feather sex-able at 3 weeks old.

Hatch #2 should be hatching out over the next couple of days.
