Rescue is tough for so many reasons. Today it’s tough because Marla is back in a kennel at our Rescue Center.

This girl is so loving. She is so quintessentially an SCR dog; perfectly imperfect, loves with her whole heart, and a total survivor. She is the kind of dog our rescue was created to save: misunderstood but oh-so-special.

Do you remember her rescue story? Last winter, Marla was left tied to a fence in Queens. We brought her to our Rescue Center before Marla rediscovered her happy spark with the help of a few really great foster homes.

Over the summer, Marla’s dreams came true when she was adopted. Unfortunately, the family’s toddler wasn’t used to having a dog and was scared of Marla. As much as they tried to make it work, it just wasn’t the right fit for Marla or the family.

Sometimes, it’s just not meant to be.

Unfortunately, that means Marla is back at our Center. Marla is 3 years old, 45 pounds, sweet with children, friendly with dogs, and could benefit from basic training. Shes a good girl, and she needs a home.

Give this sweet girl the forever home she longs for or become a foster with our organization at nycscr.org

No kidding

In 2019, the FDA released a list of 16 brand names of grain-free pet foods possibly linked to Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). Of the 305 dogs listed as affected by DCM, 73% were breeds with known genetic predisposition for DCM. Also, 61% of the dogs included had other diseases which may have contributed to cardiac disease. Despite the small, biased sample, the FDA published a statement that was then picked up by major news outlets. It went viral.

The lead veterinarian that brought to light the potential link between DCM and grain-free pet foods was Dr. Lisa Freeman. Dr. Freeman has received research support from, given sponsored lectures for, or provided professional services to Aratana Therapeutics, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Nestlé Purina PetCare, and Royal Canin (owned by Mars).

This was just a ploy by the large pet food manufacturers using their influence on FDA to single out smaller companies that were gaining an increase in market share. Unfortunately, their ploy worked. Scared pet parents switched their pets to lower quality foods filled with carbohydrates resulting in discontinuation of many wonderful pet foods and huge revenue losses for good companies.

In 2022, the FDA quietly added a note to their website stating no such link between grain-free diets and DCM could be found. In the same time frame, Mars Petcare announced its plans to acquire Champion Pet Foods, owner of two brands hit heavily by the DCM debacle, Orijen and Acana. Maybe now that Mars is acquiring Champion Pet Foods this myth will finally die.

Dogs and cats need a species-appropriate diet filled with meat and whole food ingredients, not grains and legumes!

The food could have elevated levels of vitamin D. Consuming elevated levels can lead to health issues depending on how much the dog ate and for how long.
