Not sure how to help animals in need? These four pups have a few ideas — and every single one matters.

“If you can’t adopt, foster.”
Adoption is life-changing, but not everyone is in a place to commit long-term. Fostering gives animals a temporary, loving home while they wait for their forever family. It also helps free up space in shelters so we can save more lives.

“If you can’t foster, volunteer.”
Volunteers are the heartbeat of any shelter. Whether you’re walking dogs, helping at events, cleaning kennels, or sharing your skills (photography, admin work), your time truly makes an impact.

“If you can’t volunteer, donate.”
Every dollar counts. Donations help cover food, medical care, supplies, and emergency rescues. Monthly giving, one-time gifts, or even donating items from our wishlist can save lives.

“EVERYONE can make a difference!”
No action is too small. Sharing adoptable pets online, educating friends, or even just spreading kindness makes a difference. When we all do something, amazing things happen.

Want to help? Start here. Reach out to Burke County Animal Services— and be a hero to an animal who needs you.

🐾 Meet Our Loyal Long-Timers—Ready for Their Second Chance! 🐾
These five amazing dogs have been patiently waiting far too long for a family of their own. Each one has a heart full of love and a story to tell. Could you be the one to change their lives forever?
🖤🤍 Sonic – This young boy came to us right after New Years. Having spent all these months in a shelter environment, Sonic has blossomed with the zoomies and we can’t believe this bouncy boy hasn’t been scooped up yet!
🤎🤍 Jelly Bean – Sweet like her name, Jelly Bean is a brown Hound mix with soulful eyes and a gentle nature. She’s the perfect couch companion and adores being by your side.
🖤🤍 Clint Black – A handsome black Labrador mix with a loyal spirit and a fun demeanor. Clint Black is a steady, loving, and energetic friend just waiting for someone to notice him.
🤎🤍 Copper – This brown and white Hound mix is curious, clever, outgoing, and full of charm. Copper would thrive in an active home where he can explore and be himself.
🖤🤎 Sophie – A dark brindle Boxer mix with a big personality and even bigger heart. Sophie is playful, intelligent, and ready to bring joy into your life. She’s very protective of those she loves and will always hold an interesting conversation!
These sweet souls were all found as strays and have spent too many days behind shelter walls. They each have so much love to give and are just waiting for someone to give them a chance.
📍Come meet them at Burke County Animal Services to learn more!
✨ Let’s find these long-timers the forever homes they deserve! Please share and help them find their people.

BONUS UPDATE: officially adopted 🐶❤️

UPDATE: Steve has left the building ❤️🐶 but he wanted to remind everyone to stop by and check out all his adoptable friends still waiting at the shelter!

Arrr mateys, meet Steve the Pirate!
This 8-week-old scallywag has had a ruff start—he came into rescue with a serious injury and had to have his back leg amputated. But don’t worry, Steve’s not down a leg… he’s UP a treasure chest of personality! He’s healing like a champ and already mastering the art of the three-legged zoomie.

Steve’s looking for a foster-to-adopt home where he can keep working on his pirate swagger (eye patch not included… yet). He’s neutered, adorable, and ready to steal your heart—and probably your snacks.

If you’ve got a cozy ship and a soft spot for one resilient little pirate, Steve’s ready to set sail for his forever adventure.

Stop by 425 Kirksey Dr —this first mate won’t be waiting long!

Adopt from Burke County Animal Services

On August 5, 2019, Burke County Animal Services became its own department under the County Manager, separate from Animal Control. Animal Control is still operated under the Burke County Sheriff’s Department and Morganton Public Safety.

We are the county-operated and tax-funded Animal Services Center for Burke County, North Carolina. We receive all stray animals brought in by Animal Control. Our goal is to reunite these animals with their owners. For animals who are not returned to their owners, we aim to have all adoptable animals placed into suitable homes or transferred to rescue groups where they may be adopted.

For owners wishing to rehome their pets, we do accept owner surrenders as space allows. Owners looking to rehome their pets may be asked to schedule an appointment for surrender if space does not allow us to immediately intake their animals. This "managed intake model" allows us to save more lives and find more pets their forever homes.

All cat & kitten adoptions are $90, and include spay/neuter, a 1 year rabies vaccine (if age-appropriate), standard core preventative vaccines (FVRCP), a monthly flea preventative, and dewormer as needed.
