By the time we get to this stage, the dog isn’t just following commands, they understand how to make better decisions. That’s why you’ll see them disengage when needed and commit fully when called, even at a distance.

The goal has never been to rely on tools or force outcomes. It’s about building clear communication and a relationship the dog wants to be a part of. Tools just help maintain that clarity when things get harder, they’re not the reason the dog performs.

Jollibee may be small, but like many small dogs, she came with a big personality and some big reactions to both people and dogs.

Before bringing her into an environment like this, we spent a lot of time working through her reactivity and building a clear communication system between dog and handler. Once that foundation is in place, environments like this become opportunities rather than obstacles.

Bass Pro Shops gives us everything we need for a final test. People walking by, dogs in the store, loud noises, different surfaces, new smells, and constant movement. All of it creates the perfect setting to practice neutrality and impulse control.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is a dog that understands how to regulate themselves and look to the handler for guidance even when the environment becomes stimulating.

Shinoby used to be all nerves, skittish, always in fight-or-flight, pulling excessively, or head on a swivel. But now, in this challenging session at Bass Pro Shops, you can see how far she’s come. While this isn’t her final outing with us, it’s one of the most complex or challenging outings. Each step builds confidence, so soon she’ll jump into any environment with calm neutrality and no surprises.

This didn’t happen overnight.

Rio has completed an extensive board and train with us, his owners have remained consistent with the work at home, and we recently added a mini refresher to tighten things up. Even with all of that, under my standards as a trainer, there is always more room to grow and refine.

What you’re seeing is the result of deep practice and correct layering. Training tools were properly conditioned, clearly understood, and used for communication rather than correction. His owners continued reinforcing the system outside of training sessions, which is what allowed reliability to transfer into real life.

Freedom like this is built through repetition, clarity, and consistency over time. Not shortcuts. Not overnight results. Education and structure are what make this possible.

Rio is a previous client who recently came back to board for a couple of days. While he was here, we also used that time to continue building his off leash work and recalls.

Before jumping straight into off leash freedom, we took him into a public environment. The goal was not just recalls, but exposure. Busy spaces, people, movement, and environmental pressure are where impulse control is truly tested. This tells us far more about a dog’s readiness than a quiet or controlled setting ever could.

I don’t trust any dog off leash unless I’ve seen how they handle themselves around the things they are likely to encounter in real life. Off leash work is a privilege, not a shortcut. It has to be earned through clarity, consistency, and exposure, and we never rush that process.

I also want dogs to enjoy being off leash. I’m not looking for robotic behavior or forced positions. The goal is a dog that is level headed, engaged, and happy to follow direction when asked, not one that is simply complying under pressure.

This session is just a stepping stone. Each piece builds on the next, and this foundation is what allows future off leash sessions to be safe, reliable, and fair to the dog.

One who can help their clients embark on self-discovery and leverage their competencies into their desired goals, is who we strive to be. We often hold high expectations for our pups to learn, but don’t set time aside to invest in some education towards our training. Learning little by little we will be able to be better prepared for their training process. I decided to get some more education/material to not only grow as a trainer, but to also help others by setting an example. What better way to do that then by becoming a NePoPo® Silver🥈 School graduate. The journey’s not done and working my way up to becoming a Gold 🥇

Some late night training with Aerys that we do each day to solidify what he’s learned 📚 That’s what we enjoy about board and trains, the ability to throw in training several times a day and be more hands on so we can provide our clients good results and bring out the best in their dog 🐕‍🦺.

Our new private training student Luna was brought to us due to having slight issues with staying calm and collective around other dogs🥺. We’ve managed to help and desensitize Luna to other dogs, and make sure she stays engaged/focused with the handler👍🏽. The beauty is that she has had an amazing foundation established by her owners, making it much easier to work with a dog that has an amazing drive 🙏🏽.
