Tongue Out Tuesday 😋

Not all of our animals got the memo… but the ones who did understood the assignment!

From tiny bleps to full-on tongue displays, today’s stars were caught sticking their tongues out for the camera (or maybe they were just thinking about treats). Which tongue-out photo is your favorite? 👇

Happy birthday Dash and Koa!! 🦊🎂🦊🎂

As some of the newest members of our zoo family, these brothers have already won over our students and staff who work with them every day. We’re excited to continue watching them grow and settle into their new home while sharing their unique and hilarious personalities with us.

Fun fact: Fennec foxes are incredible diggers and can create extensive burrow systems in the wild, helping them escape the desert heat and stay safe from predators. 🌵☀️

Here’s to Dash and Koa and all the adventures their second year will bring! 🎉

Have you ever visited and wondered why there are cardboard boxes inside enclosures? We use cardboard boxes as a source of beneficial enrichment! Most animals benefit from trainers putting their diets inside, allowing the animals to work for it providing mental stimulation.

Other times, our animals enjoy a nice new couch to sit in! Nova our Bob Cat as well as Naomi and Elsa our African Servals enjoy eliciting the natural behaviors of cats wanting to be in safe and enclosed spaces where they are able to observe their surrounding without being seen and also having more protection. Who doesn’t love a new bed that makes you feel cozy and safe?!

Meet Kyle, one of our student trainers at the Teaching Zoo! Kyle is one of four trainers on Ghost, the bald eagle. 🦅

Relationships with birds of prey are truly special and students like Kyle are able to gain knowledge about what it is like to care for and train them. Each of our student trainers work hard to be able to create strong relationships with our animals in order for them to trust to be shown off to our visitors! By bringing animals at our zoo to the stage, we are able to connect our visitors with wildlife to a greater extent. Kyle and Ghost hope you visit them at the Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College!

🦜💚 Happy World Parrot Day! 💚🦜

Today we’re celebrating some of the incredible parrots that call the Teaching Zoo home!

Parrots are known for their intelligence, vibrant colors, and impressive lifespans. Some macaws can live up to 80 years, while many Amazon parrots can live 60 years or more under human care.

While they make amazing ambassadors for their species, parrots are also a lifelong commitment that require specialized care, enrichment, and attention.

Today, we celebrate all parrots—from those in accredited zoos to those flying free in the wild. We are lucky to share our world with such a diverse and remarkable group of animals! 🌎🦜

Turkey vultures may not always get the love they deserve, but they play one of the most important roles in nature. As nature’s cleanup crew, they help keep ecosystems healthy by removing carrion and limiting the spread of disease.

Miles was doing exactly that in the wild when he was hit by a car, leaving him with neurological issues and a partially amputated wing. His injuries made it impossible for him to return to life in nature, but he found a new purpose.
Today, Miles helps educate people about turkey vultures and the vital role they play in our environment.

Not every wildlife story ends with a release, but Miles continues to make a difference every day while receiving plenty of love and care from the trainers who adore him ❤️🤎🪶

Every animal has its own personality… some are calm and observant, some loud and chaotic, some stubborn, curious, dramatic, or way too smart for their own good. Ever notice how animals start to look like their trainers… or maybe trainers start looking like their animals? We can never really tell.

You spend so many hours learning their behaviors, earning their trust, and adapting to their world that eventually people can pair the animal to the trainer instantly. I guess when you dedicate your life to animals, you become a little wild too

Meet:
✨Kala and Gina, the Eurasian eagle-owl
✨Richard and Ryder, the sugar glider
✨Bela and Clarence, the Galápagos giant tortoise
✨Megan and Fezzik, the Flemish giant rabbit
✨Enrique and Koan, the Laughing Kookaburra
✨Wyatt and Miles, the turkey vulture
✨Korey and Salsa, the Catalina macaw
✨Sammy and Serena, the great-horned owl
✨Gwen and Delilah, the Stanley crane
✨Jordyn and Beaker, the Abyssinian ground hornbill

POV: You grew up wanting to be a Pokémon trainer…

…and it turns out being a real-life animal trainer mostly means cleaning habitats, carrying around snacks, getting covered in fur or feathers, and trying to convince animals to cooperate for approximately 5 seconds at a time 😂

Honestly? Still the dream job ⚡️🐾
