Nyxon became acutely paralyzed in his rear limbs after a IVDD disc extrusion in his spine. Nyxon is a resilient guy!! Part of his rehab plan is using electroacupuncture. Electroacupuncture combines traditional acupuncture with gentle electrical stimulation to help promote nerve function, improve circulation, decrease inflammation, and provide pain relief. For dogs recovering from neurologic injuries like IVDD, it can be a valuable tool to support healing and improve overall comfort.

🐾 Meet Luca! 🐾

After spending many years competing in agility, this amazing Sheltie is now focused on staying strong, active, and comfortable through his senior years. Luca is 9 years young!

Luca has been dealing with some carpal discomfort and shoulder instability in his past, so his rehabilitation program is designed to build and maintain muscle strength, improve joint stability, and help manage pain. By staying proactive, we can help keep him doing the things he loves while supporting his long-term mobility and quality of life.

💪🐾 Why do we focus so much on core strength in canine rehab?
A strong core is the foundation for movement! Core muscles help support the spine, stabilize the body, improve balance, and reduce stress on the joints. This is important in all dogs but especially important for dogs with long backs and short leg like Suki!

✨ Duke’s Progress Update ✨

One month can make a big difference!
The first video shows Duke when he began his rehabilitation journey. Severe elbow arthritis was causing pain, stiffness, and a noticeable limp. Fast forward to today, and the difference is incredible!

Through a customized rehabilitation program including therapeutic exercises, laser therapy, and more. Duke is moving more comfortably, walking more smoothly, and showing much less lameness. While arthritis isn’t something we can cure, we can help improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance quality of life.

Way to go, Duke! We’re so proud of your hard work and determination.

🐾 Why We Love Cavalettis 🐾

Cavaletti exercises look simple, but they’re one of the most effective tools we use in rehabilitation for both orthopedic and neurologic patients. By walking over evenly spaced poles, dogs are encouraged to slow down, think about each step, and use their bodies more intentionally.

Benefits of cavalettis include:
▫️ Improved proprioception (body awareness)
▫️ Better balance and coordination
▫️ Increased joint flexion and range of motion
▫️ Strengthening of core and stabilizing muscles
▫️ Encouraging controlled, purposeful movement
▫️ Improved gait symmetry and stride length

05/21/2026

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) happens when the discs between the vertebrae become damaged and place pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. Signs can range from mild back pain to weakness, wobbliness, or even paralysis.

There are two main types of IVDD:
▫️ Hansen Type 1: a sudden disc extrusion, most common in chondrodystrophic breeds like Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Beagles, and Corgis
▫️ Hansen Type 2: a slower, progressive disc protrusion more commonly seen in larger breed dogs

Common signs to watch for:
• Back or neck pain
• Reluctance to jump or use stairs
• Weakness or wobbliness
• Dragging toes
• Changes in posture or gait
• Paralysis in severe cases

Early recognition and treatment matter. Rehab, pain management, strengthening, and mobility support can all play an important role in recovery and long-term quality of life 💙

Maizie is adjusting so well to her new custom rigid carpal brace from Hero Bracing 🐾

After her carpal hyperextension injury, the options recommended by the orthopedic surgeon were surgery or conservative management with bracing. Maizie’s family decided to pursue a custom brace, and she’s been gradually building up her tolerance beautifully.

She’s now up to wearing the brace for 3 hours per day and continues to become more comfortable with it each week. With custom orthotics, slow progression and careful monitoring are key — especially watching closely for any pressure sores or skin irritation. So far, Maizie is doing great.

Bracing can be an excellent option for select patients to help provide stability, improve function, and support mobility while avoiding or delaying surgery.

Weight shifting exercises can be a simple but effective way to help improve balance, core strength, and limb loading after injury. 🐾

Addie recently tore her CCL and also has severe arthritis in all four limbs, so we’re keeping her exercises gentle and low impact. By elevating her front limbs slightly and slowly moving her head side to side, we encourage controlled weight shifting to help activate stabilizing muscles and improve body awareness without overloading her joints.

Meet Bear! — a 140 lb Cane Corso who refuses to let orthopedic challenges slow him down.

Bear is managing multiple conditions including patellar luxation, cruciate disease, and hip dysplasia. With a dedicated family and a multimodal rehab plan he is doing great so far. Plans are not always linear in the fact that Bear still has good days and bad. Our goal is to keep him on an upward trajectory.

In this session you’ll see:
- Sit-to-stands with proper posture (building strength + control, especially for the quadriceps)
- Cavalettis with weaves (coordination + limb awareness)
- Elevated forelimb work on a wobble disc (core + stability)

Rehab is about meeting the patient where they are and building a plan that works for them and their family.

You may recognize Archie—we’ve shared parts of his journey before.

After an IVDD disc extrusion, Archie was paralyzed and unable to walk on his own, even after surgery.

These clips are about 3 months apart.
With a dedicated family and a consistent, multimodal rehab approach, Archie went from assisted walking… to walking independently 🐾

Progress doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen with the right support. Archie has also lost over 2 lbs which was a huge goal achieved!
