This! If you are thinking about adding a fur baby to your family, and you have no idea what you are looking for, please feel free to reach out to me, I’d love to help you decide. Dogs end up at the shelter once they’re not puppies anymore and often families select breeds that don’t mesh well with the family activity level/schedule.

I’m starting to see holiday decorations, which means it’s time for your 3rd annual reminder:

Dogs are long term commitments, not gifts. You wouldn’t gift someone a payment plan or a chore list (even if it was cute), and dogs are an added cost and layer of responsibility. Very fun, very sweet, but still a lot of work.

Communicate about whether they are prepared for that kind of commitment BEFORE committing them to it. If you intend to get a dog for your kids, ensure that you are prepared to step in and ensure the dog’s care if your child can’t manage it on their own.

Research your breed(s) BEFORE bringing them home and adopt or shop responsibly.
