Just a heads up horse owners around here. This strong winter storm is going to be a big surprise to our horses. Be prepared to blanket as needed as few have much of a coat right now. And apply a 3 to 4 tablespoons of table salt to their grain each feeding between now and Thursday. If you give electrolytes STILL ADD TABLE SALT. If they've been getting it regularly still add it. It's the increase in sodium and chloride that fools the brain simulating dehydration before they get dehydrated. If they read the book then hopefully they will drink more and thus not get dehydrated and colicky thereafter having to see me.

ASPEN RIDGE EQUINE HOSPITAL CLIENT NOTICE:
We are not sick! However, Aspen Ridge office will be closed for the next several days due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We are still making appointments as usual and seeing our patients on routine and emergency basis. Call the hospital (719 265-6677) and leave a message. We will be checking messages throughout the day and returning calls as timely as possible. Arrangements will be made with clients to take care of whatever is needed including making appointments, getting dispensable medications out, records forwarded, etc. If you have an emergency, simply go through the normal after-hours protocol for notifying Dr. Woodall at any time. If either Kelly or I are feeling any symptoms of any illness we promise to let you know and remotely help you take care of any issues that are needed. We ask our clients to do the same for us. I feel Aspen Ridge Equine Hospital needs to take this precaution in hopes of not having to endure a fourteen-day quarantine and thus be unavailable to our client’s needs. To repeat: Aspen Ridge Equine Hospital and Dr. Woodall are healthy and seeing calls, both routine and emergency, for our regular clients. The front office will be closed for hopefully no more than two weeks, effective starting Monday 3/16/20.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Dr. Chuck Woodall

VSV Update 07/11/2019: Confirmed in Additional Colorado Counties

Vesicular Stomatitis has been confirmed in La Plata, Larimer, and Weld counties in Colorado. A table with the total count of premises under quarantine for VSV by county is on the Colorado Dept. of Ag website.

If you are planning any trips please have a back up plan available if and when VS gets into our area. For instance, any horse going to Wyoming from a VS positive county requires a 72 hour health cert, not the typical 30 day. Every state is different. Some states may not let you in, ie: Kentucky has done this in the past when VS was present in our state. Call us if you have any questions. Aspen Ridge Equine Hospital, 719 265-6677.

Vesicular Stomatitis has come back to Colorado and is even here in El Paso County. If you find your horse having difficulty eating or salivating a lot they may be effected by this disease. In rare cases they can develop lesions on their coronet band and become very lame. The disease has a much larger impact on cattle. Just a word to all worried about reports of a horse having EHV1 in The Trails near Colorado Springs. I was the first person to see the horse. The horse did not have signs consistant with EHV1 of any kind (neurologic or respiratory). He did not survive and laboratory tests were sent in and found to be negative for EHV1. I spoke with the state veteinarian today and he said that horse was his biggest worry in the state until he spoke with me and learned of the clinical signs and test results. There is no suspect case near Colorado Springs at this time.
If your horse is running a fever and moving in an uncoordinated fashion, call Aspen Ridge as soon as possible (719 265-6677) and we will help immediately to ensure your horses well being .

Aspen Ridge Equine Hospital is putting together it's new web site and would like clients to share photographs of them and their horses that have been patients at Aspen Ridge. No one will be identified but images of you and your horses competing or just having fun would highlight the new home page. Your input is appreciated. Send to [email protected]

Greetings all! This posting is in hopes you will contact your congressperson about a matter that is not an outright emergency...yet but, could be at some point. The Drug Enforcement Agency has fairly recently started to get more strict enforcing aspects of the Controlled Substances Act which could dramatically effect treatments of your horses on the farm. Specifically the use of some sedatives and euthanasia solution would not be able to be taken away from the stationary facility of registration, eg: Aspen Ridge Equine Hospital. The following links will give you more detail as to the pending Bills (HR 1528/s1171) that are currently stalled in the House of Representatives, though passed in the Senate, that would add verbage to the Controlled Substances Act. In Colorado, there are only three congressman in support of this act; Gardner in Dist. 4, Tipton in Dist. 3 and Polis in Dist. 2. A letter sent by you to any other congressperson in Colorado, or other State, would be beneficial. Please read the links below and feel free to call me if you have any questions. On July 6th, 2013, CSU Diagnostic Lab confirmed that a bull from Weld County was rabies-positive.

On July 5th, a veterinarian was called to examine and treat a bull that was down, dehydrated, depressed, and straining in a pasture near Berthoud, Colorado.

The bull initially responded to treatment but still was weak in the hind legs; he later died the same day. The brain of the bull was submitted to CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Fort Collins; CSU pathologists subsequently confirmed that the bull was positive for rabies. Local public health authorities are working closely with those involved in the case for appropriate rabies post-exposure prophylaxis.

There has been a significant increase in the incidence of rabies over the last five years in Colorado. This recent case of rabies in a bovine highlights the importance to consider rabies as a possible etiology in all neurological cases. The predominant terrestrial animal which currently acts as a vector for rabies is the skunk but other wildlife species that can carry and transmit the rabies virus are bats, raccoons, and foxes
