🐦‍🔥 Phoenix 🐦‍🔥

Just 7 days ago, I shared an emergency situation involving a mare whose halter had become embedded in her face so severely that she was struggling to eat.

What many people don’t know is that after seeing the condition she was in, the BLM repossessed her due to neglect and reached out to ask if I would be willing to take over ownership.

My first answer was no.

I already have plenty of personal projects, and I knew taking on another horse would mean a significant commitment of time, resources, and energy. The plan was for the BLM to pick her up and transport her back to Nebraska.

But over the next few days, something changed.

Phoenix started to let her guard down. She became curious. She started watching me instead of avoiding me. Little by little, she began showing me the sweet soul hiding underneath all the fear and uncertainty.

The more I got to know her, the harder it became to imagine her loading onto a trailer and disappearing back into holding. I couldn’t stop thinking about her future—wondering when she might get another chance, whether someone would see what I was starting to see, and whether she would end up in the kind of home she deserved.

So I called the BLM back and told them I’d take her.

And honestly, I haven’t regretted it for a second.

Today, Phoenix is doing great. She’s gaining weight, healing well, and discovering that humans aren’t so bad after all. Her favorite thing in the world right now? Neck scratches. The moment you find the right spot, she melts. 💕

It’s amazing what can happen in just one week when a horse is given proper care, patience, and a chance.

Phoenix’s story is far from over, but for the first time in a long time, her future looks bright.

Welcome home, Phoenix. ❤️

I wasn’t able to work any horses today because I had an emergency case come in that needed immediate attention.

This sweet girl had a halter that had become embedded into her skin. Her owner recently adopted her and, like many people working with wild horses, was doing the best they could to get a halter on and begin handling her. Unfortunately, the halter ended up being too tight. Even though it had only been on for 11 days, it still caused significant injury.

The halter had become so tight that she was struggling to eat comfortably. It was heartbreaking to see, but thankfully it is now off and she is getting the care she needs.

I wanted to share this as an educational reminder for anyone working with wild horses, rescues, or newly gentled horses. Even in a short amount of time, a halter can become a serious problem if it isn’t checked regularly. What starts as a small fit issue can quickly turn into painful sores, swelling, and pressure wounds.

When possible, remove halters between training sessions. If a halter needs to stay on temporarily, make sure it is fitted correctly and checked often. Wild horses can be challenging to catch, so it’s understandable why people sometimes leave halters on, but this situation is a good reminder of how quickly things can change.

Thankfully, this mare is now on the road to healing. Hopefully her experience helps raise awareness and prevents another horse from going through the same thing.

Please take a few minutes to check your horses’ halters today.

Did you know that feeding your horse a small (like 1/2 flake) of hay before riding or loading your horse in a trailer can reduce the risk of gastric ulcers?

Day 3

Eliana was way better today after the saddle was put on.

I should have put the lunge line on her but she was doing so well and stood so calmly that I didn’t think it was necessary but boy was I wrong. So today we put the lunge line on and she was perfect.
