We often talk about the American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft and their suitability for various jobs. ASHDA horses are very versatile and excel in many disciplines, and are always up for any task they’re asked to perform. Be it in the show ring, on the trails, working on a ranch, equi-therapy horses, no matter the job you ask them to do, they can do it!
Now we know you’ll never see American Sugarbush Harlequin drafts racing in the Kentucky Derby, but you will see one on the track es**rting Thoroughbreds to the starting gate. ASHDA Hall of Fame gelding, Daisy’s Chief Dane, (Harley), is quite well known at Keeneland Race Track, but on Derby Day, Churchill Downs is all abuzz when racing fans lay eyes on Harley for the very first time. He’s a huge favorite of fans all around the world!
His size and loud blanket pattern are hard to miss and draw quite a bit of attention! His calm nature and mass, are just a couple of things that make this handsome gelding well suited for this task.
His owner and Lifetime ASHDA member, Monnie Goetz, has stated that many of the Thoroughbreds they es**rt to the gate find comfort in Harley’s size. He’s like a large equine pacifier and security blanket for the excited race horses, and with his size, he has no problem handling them.
As with any job, occasionally there will be that moment when a bit of a situation arises. In the case of this photo taken a few years ago, an excitable young Thoroughbred decided to test Harley’s patience and his job skills. Jockey, Adam Beschizza, kept calm and handled it all in stride, while Harley and Monnie did what they do best.
The Kentucky Derby is this coming Saturday and Harley and Monnie will be on the job! Who will be watching just to spot Harley?

Who are we?

We are defiantly a horse of a different color but we like it that way.

We are a ranch, not a stable and the difference is subtle but it is there. We do not claim to be Western or English but concentrate being good horseman regardless of discipline. We like to be the place you can do things your own way and the ‘barn witch’ is not going to come hunt you down to lecture you on your own horse. We have a strict live and let live policy. We don’t make enough money in this industry to be miserable and our clients certainly don’t pay their hard earned money to be irritated by someone who feels the need to drag others down. We consider this a hobby and while we have turned out several national level riders, the first and foremost goal is to help people have a place to enjoy the ranch life with all the training/help/answers you could possibly need just a question or a lesson away. Horse people as a whole tend to be very ‘their way is the only way’ mentality and we strive not to have that feel in our barn. We have owners that ride every day and we have some that like to kick back with a glass of wine while watching their horse graze, both are doing what they love and that’s great.

We are not helmet Nazi’s and we will never be. When riding ranch stock we require those under 18 to wear a helmet but we do not force our clientele with private stock to follow suite. This comes a bit from the western side of the barn and a bit from our belief that each person should be free to enjoy their horse interactions any way they see fit without judgment. Our owners span the range of those with the latest great safely gear to ba****ck, barefoot with only a halter and lead on a trail ride. For those under 18 it’s a parent’s decision and who would we be to say we know better than a child’s parents how to keep them safe? We however do not allow bike or other sport helmets, either the proper gear or nothing at all. We have helmets to lend for those not ready to financially commit.
