Thew Suskiewicz was a previous manager here at the Monterey Abalone Company who contributed in many ways to our operation and had a big hand in getting us going down the path of growing and collecting our own edible seaweeds to provide to the public. We're happy to do what we can to support his continued education and future career and therefore are forwarding this message on his behalf.

"I’m heading a research cruise this summer in Maine. Given the short time frame and the recent federal freezing of grants through the EPA, Sea Grant and NOAA, we’re banking on a crowd-sourced financing campaign to make it happen. It seems to be our best (and perhaps only) funding option with three months until it starts.
Everything we raise goes towards the expedition, and the goal of the expedition is to quantify seaweed communities in the Gulf of Maine and compare them to historical records from the 1970s and 1980s. You can support this research two different ways, i) making a donation and ii) sharing it on Facebook and via email.

You've heard of car races and motorcycle races, you've heard of horse races and rubber ducky races but you have not lived until you've been to an !! Don't worry, we got your back. Come on down to this weekend on the Old Fishermans Wharf in to celebrate in the migration of the grey whale and join in supporting and raising awareness for our ocean. Amanda and Andrew will be hosting the first round of abalone races at 11 a.m. On Saturday and Sunday with a second race at 2 p.m. C/o Art Seavey will be speaking about abalone and aquaculture along with Dr. Mike Graham from Moss Landing Marine Labs at 11 on Sunday as well which you don't want to miss. This is a fun and educational event for the whole family. A pretty photo of taken by after coming up in one of our cages on the farm. The jewel star is one of the species of sea stars that have been affected by the sea star wasting disease that has spread through much of the northern pacific coastlines but we have slowly been seeing more and more making their way back into our area. A healthy population of jewel stars are known for keeping the mussel populations under control and are one of the species we collect for research and education from time to time.

More on getting to know our crew.... Although we consider ourselves a family here, these two really are. Trevor is the co-owner of Monterey abalone and his daughter Amanda has been working at the farm for just over 4 years after her move back to the area to complete her degree in Marine Science at CSUMB. These photos are some of the shots taken while out on their "slug run". Three times a week these two head out on the small Boston whaler to pull traps that have been dropped in about 260ft of water to hopefully collect what is commonly known as the giant sea slug (Pleurobranchaea). This history goes much farther back. The late Dr. Rim Fay, a well known marine biologist of Southern California and collector of marine aquaria used to collect these same slugs for the same neuroscientist these two are collecting for today. Guess you could say it runs in the family ;)
