Montclair Community Farms (formerly Miller Street Community Farm) is
a coalition of HOMECorp, Montclair Department of Health and Human Services, Montclair History Center, Montclair State University, and Rutgers Cooperative Extension: Essex County 4-H and Master Gardeners

We farm two sites in Montclair, one at Miller Street and one at the Montclair History Center. Community volunteers and Youth fa

rmers tend the farm sites along with a farm coordinator and farm director. Together we plant, grow, harvest and sell vegetables and produce at more affordable prices throughout the gardening season.

MCF is proud to partner with Montclair Township to expand community composting through the Montclair Compost Initiative! ♻️✨

Together, we’ve already diverted over 10 tons of kitchen scraps from landfills, turning them into nutrient-rich compost that helps us grow healthy, organic produce right here in Montclair.

Thanks to new grant support, we’re upgrading to a rocket composter, which will streamline our process, reduce manual labor, and dramatically increase how much we can compost. More food scraps saved, more living soil created, and a cleaner, greener community for everyone.

This initiative also makes composting accessible across town with community drop-off sites and multilingual outreach, ensuring ALL residents can take part.

This year, MCF proudly educated over 1,700 children and adults about the environment, sustainable farming, and the magic of growing food! 🌱✨

From Sweet Pea Spring Break and Sweet Pea Summer, to Farm Camp, Farm School, and afterschool programs, our kiddos explored nature, learned to cook with fresh ingredients, and discovered how to care for our planet.

We also continued our adult education through Senior Wellness at the Van Vleck-Turner Greenhouse, creating meaningful connections across generations.

As Val, our Administrative Coordinator, shared:
“Seeing how curious and passionate our students are reminds me why I do what I do.” 💚

Every year, our partnership with Van Vleck House & Gardens allows us to bring thousands of seedlings to life inside the Van Vleck-Turner Greenhouse. But this space is so much more than a place to grow plants. It’s where connection, learning, and community truly flourish.

Through our Senior Wellness Program, local seniors, interns, and staff work side by side to seed, water, and nurture our plants. This year alone, we grew over 9,500 seedlings together! 🌱💚

Even after losing access to our Miller Street site after 13 incredible years, we didn’t stop growing.

This season, we harvested 1,200 pounds of produce from our Orange Road site and a portion of that was donated or sold through our Farm Stand to support our amazing community.

🚜 Our Farm Stand traveled to 55 markets, serving 716 people and proudly supporting 200 SNAP and FMNP clients, helping promote food security and healthier lifestyles.

🌱 In the greenhouse, we continued to strengthen our partnership with Van Vleck House & Gardens. Together with seniors, interns, and volunteers, we nurtured over 9,500 seedlings that filled both our fields and our Annual Plant Sale.

🌿 And through hands-on education with our 27 interns, we helped more than 1,700 people of all ages build a deeper connection with nature and understand the importance of environmental stewardship.

This year, we received devastating news, the AmeriCorps program was issued a federal stop-work order, and overnight, we lost half of our farm team right at the height of our growing season.

But thanks to our incredible community, we didn’t stop. Through your donations and support, we were able to keep our AmeriCorps members onsite and paid until the program was reinstated.

AmeriCorps provides stipends that allow passionate, service-minded individuals to work with nonprofits like MCF. Over the years, more than 30 AmeriCorps members have served with us, many of whom, including some of our current staff, got their start right here.

Our AmeriCorps members have been instrumental in everything we do, from growing food, running programs, building community, and pushing forward a vision of justice and sustainability.

We are beyond grateful to everyone who stood by us, and we’re thrilled to have the AmeriCorps program back in action.

With the help of the The Community FoodBank of New Jersey, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, and the New Jersey Office for the Food Security Advocate, we were able to install a walk-in cooler and wash station!

These new additions to our farm mean that we are able to clean and store more produce, ultimately giving us a greater ability to provide for our community.

Keeping our produce onsite makes it easier to prepare for our markets and get our fresh, organic produce out into the homes of many!

When SNAP benefits were cut during the federal shutdown, many of our neighbors were left wondering how they’d feed their families.

This year alone, 30% of our clients rely on SNAP/FMNP to access fresh food. At MCF, we’re proud to stand in that gap, providing sustainable, nutritious produce and holding 8 pop-up markets to distribute food at no charge to those most in need.

As one of our interns, Sam Lewis, shared:

“There’s something spectacular about putting so much energy into caring for plants and animals and knowing that those nutritious foods end up feeding people who really need them.”
