I've adopted 2 adult dogs in my life, and both times I chose them bc they were soooooo focused on people. I lucked out and got 2 dogs that were more interested in me than anything else, which made giving them instructions so much easier. But many dogs are different and they are interested in everything else. This is a tip to help them focus on you and to build that relationship.

I have had clients with the most shy and fearful dogs who would bark at the mailman tell me their dog is trying to be alpha. This is the absurdity that this theory has created. The dog parents neglect to see that their dog is actually insecure, and instead try and "dominate" her, thinking the problem will be solved if they become the alpha. Anyone with any sense can see that this will only make a fearful dog more afraid.
So please, read this to understand and undo that damage to dog training that the likes of Cesar Milan has done. The first line of this article should help get you on the right page:

"Unless you and your dog are both captive wolves and you consistently maintain priority access to resources such as food, sleeping places, and mating rights, you are not the “alpha.” Nor will you ever be, because neither the term nor the relationship applies to humans and dogs."

OH I LOVE THIS! I would love to manage a team of volunteers to walk elderly and sick people's dogs. Any have advice how to start a non-profit doing this???
