To celebrate National Volunteer Appreciation Week, we will be highlighting a different volunteer each day that has shown exceptional compassion, enthusiasm, and dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of MBAS pets 🐶💚🐱

Today's featured volunteers: 🌟Taylor Mikulla & Garrett Janda 🌟

Taylor and Garrett volunteer in so many ways for the shelter, it would almost be easier to say what they DON'T do! They clean the shelter, exercise and bathe dogs, foster dogs, help with events, do transports, regularly make donations...the list goes on. But what we would like to shine a light on today is the fact that they have volunteered for more shelter cleaning days in the last year than any other volunteers-31 days to be exact! That's right, out of 52 weeks in the year, they were here for 31 of them (and that doesn't include fostering/events/etc.). Their work ethic and positive attitudes are an inspiration to both staff and fellow volunteers, and the enthusiasm they have for helping animals in need is evident in everything they do. We can always rely on Taylor and Garrett to be there when support is needed, and whether that task is large or small, their time and effort truly make a difference.

Please join us in saying thank you, Taylor & Garrett, for volunteering!

Today's featured volunteers: 🌟Pam & Michael Hilliard🌟

Pam and Michael have opened their home and hearts by fostering more dogs than any other foster volunteers this year! If the shelter is over capacity and needs kennel space, a dog needs extra care for a medical issue, or a long-term resident needs a break from the shelter for a while, Pam and Michael are there to provide a safe and welcoming temporary home whenever they are able. Their foster dogs are accepted into the family with open arms, like they were meant to be there all along, and it's not long before the pups are snoozing on laps, sleeping in human beds, gallivanting around the yard with the resident dog, Bailey, and going along on family trips. The love and care they get at the Hilliard's is just what they need before moving on, tails wagging, to their forever homes 💚

Please join us in saying thank you, Pam & Michael, for volunteering!

Today's featured volunteer: 🌟Mechelle Buckles🌟

Mechelle donates her time to the shelter in many ways: she comes in once per week to assist with kennel cleaning, fosters dogs when she is able, and has helped with adoption events. All of those things alone are worthy of praise, but what has earned her a special spot on this week's list is that she has completed more pet transports this year than any other volunteer-by far! If a dog or cat needs a ride, Mechelle is the one that makes it happen. From rescue transports to vet visits-whether it’s a single animal or a whole crew, a quick trip or a long haul-she consistently steps up, ensuring they get where they need to go in a safe and timely manner. Thanks to her, many animals have gone on to find forever homes, and for that we are forever grateful.

Please join us in saying thank you, Mechelle, for volunteering!

Today's featured volunteer: 🌟Apryl Delgado🌟

Apryl has affectionately earned the title of volunteer "cat lady," and rightfully so: she has fostered more kittens and cats this past year than any other foster volunteer! When felines need bottle feeding, extra TLC for a medical issue, or some socialization before being placed for adoption, we know who to call! That's a lot of hours feeding little mouths, cleaning messes, administering medications, giving baths, etc. But all that work pays off when her fosters go off to their adoptive homes, ready to start their new lives! Apryl gives many cats a very special gift: the opportunity to be adopted, something they likely wouldn't have had without her dedicated and selfless care.

Please join us in saying thank you, Apryl, for volunteering!

Today's featured volunteer: 🌟Michelle Bauer🌟

Michelle dedicates many Saturdays to volunteering at our offsite adoption events, and helped us out at almost EVERY event this past year! She tirelessly loads and unloads needed supplies, makes sure adoptable dogs get exercise and socialization throughout the event, and most importantly, helps make perfect matches between adopters and pets! We can always count on her warm and upbeat attitude and true passion for helping homeless pets.

Please join us in saying thank you, Michelle, for volunteering!

April 19th-25th, 2026 is National Volunteer Appreciation Week!

While we can never thank our volunteers enough for donating their time and energy to the pets at MBAS, we want to take this opportunity to highlight the selflessness and dedication of these outstanding individuals.

Throughout the week, we will also be featuring several volunteers who went above and beyond this past year, highlighting their stories and celebrating the impact they've made.

Please join us in saying THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!!

Topsy reached 1 YEAR in shelter yesterday 😭

This is BY FAR the longest we have ever held an animal in the shelter. The sad truth is that many dogs do not do well in the shelter mentally or physically after several months, unless they are lucky enough to spend time in a foster home. However, Topsy is still in great spirits and aside from being heartworm positive, is completely healthy!

We have held out hope for this long because we feel that Topsy is deserving of a loving home, but she can't wait forever. Please contact us ASAP to adopt Topsy!!

Topsy is still waiting to be adopted!

Topsy has been at the shelter longer than any other pet-EVER. She has been to many adoption events, been advertised by staff and volunteers, and won over the hearts of whoever she meets, but hasn't found her match. And while she is still doing ok mentally and physically with us, we have to be realistic: the shelter is continually full and she cannot stay here forever; shelter life is no life for a dog long term. Her time is running out 💔

Topsy is
✅Spayed
✅Vaccinated
✅UTD on parasite prevention
✅Microchipped
✅Good with older kids and adults

✨Special notes✨
◾Topsy is heartworm positive, which is completely treatable, non-contagious to other pets and people, and treatments costs are TOTALLY FREE!
◾Topsy has shown mixed reactions to other dogs, and likes to have her own space. She would most likely do well in a home with low energy/older dogs, or as an only dog. She needs to be tested with any current dogs in the household prior to adoption.

Please contact us ASAP if you are interested in giving Topsy a forever home by emailing us at [email protected] or calling (281) 214-9045!

*UPDATE: ELLE HAS BEEN ADOPTED!*
🌟Foster Spotlight: Meet Elle!🌟

🐶 Elle came to the shelter back in September as an approximately 8 month old pup. She arrived as a stray with her sister, who was adopted within a couple weeks after arriving. We thought that Elle would surely be adopted soon after, but no one showed interest.

🐶 As the weeks turned to months, we watched Elle's spark fade. In the stressful shelter environment, and without her sister for company, she was shutting down. The Elle we knew was bubbly, playful, and loved making human friends; the dog before us only wanted to be in her kennel, had no interest in playing, refused to walk on leash, and was terrified of strangers. It broke our hearts 💔

🐶 This is where our amazing fosters step in! Despite already regularly volunteering at the shelter and previously adopting two MBAS dogs, volunteers Taylor and Garrett knew that for Elle to have a real shot at adoption, she would need to get out of the shelter environment. Elle went home with them and while it took a day or two to fully settle in, her behavior began to improve almost immediately!

🐶 In just a week and a half, Taylor and Garrett have reported that Elle has become much more social, has had a blast playing with their other dogs, has been perfect in her crate, and has only had a couple potty training accidents. She is still getting used to walking on leash, getting baths, and riding in the car, but is constantly improving!

🐶 The ideal forever home for Elle would be on the quieter side, but other playful dogs would be a huge plus! If you think Elle would be a good fit for your family and would like to adopt, please contact us to schedule an adoption appointment 😊
