The garden confession: I was very late starting my seeds this year… as in, I hadn’t started them at all. 😅

So when I saw that Betsy at Grow & Bestow Flower House was having a plant sale, I knew it was perfect timing. I came home with some beautiful, healthy starters and spent the day getting them tucked into the garden beds.

Today’s work looked like tomatoes going in, peppers and eggplant finding their spots, cucumbers and squash settling into their beds, and a few companion flowers and herbs sprinkled throughout to keep the pollinators happy. The cattle panel arch is ready for vines to climb, and the garden is finally starting to feel alive again after winter.

There’s still plenty more planting to do, but it feels good to have our spring garden officially underway here at Bloom & Buzz Farmstead. 🌱🐝

Now we wait for sunshine, a little rain, and a whole lot of growing.

🌿 Hydroponic Salad System — Now Planted

We got our hydro system up and running yesterday, and it’s officially filled.

Because this system grows in circulating water (no soil), plant placement matters. Smaller, faster greens go where they won’t be shaded. Larger heads and strawberries are spaced where they’ll have room to widen and trail.

Here’s what we installed:
• Arugula
• Mizuna
• Equinox Spinach
• Black Summer Pac Choi*
• Red Pac Choi*

*Pac choi and bok choy are actually the same species — just different varieties. Ours include a dark green summer-tolerant type and a red-leaf version for color in our salad bowls.

• Spring Mix
• Butterhead (Adriana)
• Romaine (Breen)
• Romaine (Blue Rock)
• Fronteras Strawberries

We placed it under sailcloth to soften our Texas heat and protect tender greens as we move toward spring.

What I love most about hydro is this:
Clean water + balanced nutrients + consistent light = rapid, steady growth. No weeds. Minimal pest pressure. Harvests just steps from the kitchen.

This is our way of keeping salads truly seasonal and truly fresh.

We’ll keep you posted as it fills in. 🌱

🌿 Welcome to Bloom & Buzz Farmstead 🐝

This little corner of the world is where we tend bees, grow food, and learn to live in rhythm with the land. Bloom & Buzz is a working farmstead—equal parts garden beds, buzzing hives, soil under our nails, and small harvests made with care.

Here you’ll see:
🍯 Life with the bees (and the honey they gift us)
🌱 Seasonal growing, planting, harvesting, and soil tending
🐰 New life and farmstead rhythms (yes, rabbits are joining us!)
🌼 Pollinator gardens, blooms, and the beauty of watching nature do her thing
🥧 The way our land supports what we make and share

We move at the pace of what’s in season. Sometimes that means abundance, sometimes it means waiting. Everything here is shaped by weather, bees, soil, and the small daily acts of tending that make a farmstead feel alive.

If you’re drawn to slow growing, small-batch making, bees in holy basil, hands in the dirt, and the beauty of building something gently over time—you’re in the right place.

Welcome in. 🌿🐝

Today was a big delivery day at Bloom & Buzz Farmstead 🌱

We’re getting ready to plant out the garden beds, and today’s box from Johnny’s brought all the promise of what’s to come.

Later in the day we received our seedlings for the hydroponics.

Little by little, we're getting things growing again.

There’s a whole lot of planning and tending happening behind the scenes as we ready the farmstead for spring. 🌱

We’ve sold out of our elderberry syrup (again!)—which feels like such a gift—and we’re working on making more. The rhythm right now is a balancing act between using our honey for seasonal wellness batches and saving enough for Honeyed Petal Bakehouse. When you work with what the bees give, you learn to move at their pace.

We’re also expanding the hive family this year with two more hives to help us keep up with production, and we’re welcoming rabbits to the farmstead for their wonderful, soil-loving fertilizer.

We’re already longing for those moments like these when the holy basil is buzzing again—bees humming in the sun, reminding us why we do all this tending in the first place. 🐝✨

✨ New at the storefront tomorrow ✨

I’m placing 4 bottles of our Bloom & Buzz Farmstead Elderberry Syrup at Come To The Table tomorrow.

This syrup is made in small batches with:
• organic elderberries + herbs
• raw honey from our own bees
• slow-simmered care and intention

If you’re local and love having something cozy on hand for the season ahead, you’ll find a few bottles waiting for you at the Open House tomorrow. Once these four are gone, the next batch will be produced when the farmstead and bakehouse rhythm allows. 🌿

Grateful for community spaces that support local makers and farmstead-grown goodness.

🥶🌶️ The last haul before the freeze.

We gathered everything we could before the winter storm rolls in and tucks the garden in for a while. Poblanos, shish*tos, and eggplant—and a couple of strawberries from the hydroponics

Next up on the menu:
🔥 blistered, roasted shish*tos
🫑 cozy stuffed poblanos
🍆 layered eggplant stacks

There’s something deeply satisfying about this moment—one last harvest, one last burst of color, and a kitchen about to be filled with warmth while the cold settles outside.

Grateful for the garden’s timing 🙏

This year’s honey haul is in, and I’m calling it—our best honey yet.
I can’t help but think the bees’ love affair with our holy basil has something to do with it.

For the second year in a row, the basil patch has been absolutely alive with them.
