Heck Yeah!!!
This past week was SUPER busy!
🐱 Tuesday: We took 30 cats and 5 dogs to Safe Harbor Animal Coalition for spay/neuter surgeries.
🐶 Thursday: We transported 18 dogs and 11 cats to the Spay Neuter Impact Project.
🐈 Friday: 20 more community cats were trapped, neutered, and returned through our TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program.
That’s a total of 61 cats and 23 dogs altered in just one week! Every animal spayed or neutered helps slow the cycle of unwanted litters and reduces the number of homeless animals in our community.
It was absolutely amazing to see so many members of our community step up to help make this happen. I am incredibly grateful to each and every one of you!
I would also like to give a special shout-out to an incredible lady who is making a huge difference in the TNR world here in Monroe County—Mrs. Dawn Cole. She has been doing a tremendous job trapping cats not only in Uriah but also in Frisco City. Your dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. Thank you for everything you do!
A huge thank you also goes to the Monroe County Alabama Humane Society for helping make these surgeries possible by providing vouchers to families who otherwise could not afford to have their pets spayed or neutered. Together, we’re making a real impact in reducing the number of unwanted dogs and cats.
I also want to express my deepest appreciation to everyone at Safe Harbor Animal Coalition and the Spay Neuter Impact Project. They do so much more than perform surgeries—they truly care about every animal that comes through their doors.
One of the cats on our Safe Harbor transport had a severe eye condition. Their team was able to address the issue and help the owner obtain affordable surgery, giving that cat a much better quality of life.
The Spay Neuter Impact Project also discovered that one of our shelter dogs, Chico, likely had a diaphragmatic hernia. Thanks to their careful examination, we were able to get him to an emergency clinic for X-rays. Sadly, the surgery he needed was estimated at $1,500, a cost we simply could not afford. With heavy hearts, we made the difficult decision to let Chico go peacefully. While it was heartbreaking, we are thankful his condition was discovered so he didn’t continue to suffer.
With 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. load times throughout the week, we are definitely exhausted—but it was worth every mile, every early morning, and every minute spent helping prevent future litters from being born into homelessness.
These trips do come at a cost. This week’s transports alone totaled $460 in fuel, stretching our shelter budget to its limit.
