For my Loose Leash Walkers in training! Sometimes reactivity can pop up in adolescence. Or perhaps your pup already had some bad feels about stranger people and other dogs or animals/objects you may encounter.

We all communicate to our dogs in ways we don’t notice.
With reactive dogs especially.... it’s important to be aware of the signals we’re sending.
The beauty of having a dog trainer work with you is we can see them ....clearly.
These are some of the more common ones which can alert your dog to the presence of their triggers.

Winding the leash around a wrist.
That's a classic example of "priming" a dog for a possible reaction.
We have made the lead shorter and tighter....on a leash reactive dog.
Always an issue.

Verbally announcing to others.
We may mean well, but dogs quickly pick up on the phrases and tones we use. What you say can become part of their trigger chain

Scanning
We need to do it with reactive dogs...but we need to be less obvious about it.
You scan. ➡️They scan.➡️Reactivity follows

Tightening the leash/lead.
As humans we want to limit issues that could occur.
Unfortunately adding tension and pulling a dog in closer at the sight of their trigger can make everything worse.

With a reactive dog....we need to be careful with what we are saying.

Every dog learns best in an environment of kindness. Intimidation or fear may temporarily stop a behavior, but it ultimately damages trust and creates anxiety. Training with rewards, such as treats, play, or praise, helps your dog understand what you want while building a stronger bond. Kindness isn’t “soft”. It’s science-backed and effective. 💛🐾

Puppies don’t come with a focus button… but you can teach one. 🙌
This week’s is the Touch cue, a tiny nose-to-palm “boop” that gives you instant attention anywhere. It’s gentle, fun, and incredibly useful for moving your pup without grabbing or nagging, guiding through doorways, redirecting jumping, and laying foundations for recall and loose-leash skills.

How to try it today:
• Hold one empty hand at your pup’s nose level (flat or slightly cupped).
• When they boop it, mark (“Yes!” or click) and treat with your other hand near your leg.
• Repeat 5–8 times, then say “Touch” as they move to your hand.
• Add tiny challenges—move your hand a few inches, switch sides, take one step.
• Practice in 3 easy spots (kitchen, hallway, yard). Think 30–60 seconds per mini session.

Celebrate every check-in and every boop—those little wins add up fast. 💛
Tell me where you’d use Touch first: doorways, greetings, or walks?

A very common misunderstanding of what socialization is. When we think socialization we think being social. Of course it seems like a logical conclusion. However, socialization is the exposure to novel experiences or objects in a controlled manner to create positive associations to prevent becoming neophobic. (Fear of novelty)

😕"You don't want my puppy to play with my mates dog...but hang on, how can they get confident without those play sessions".
Confidence first.....Playdates second.✅
Play is play.
It really isn't true socialisation.

If we force interactions on an anxious puppy or a puppy that is struggling with confidence.... we can cause issues which can take a very long time to resolve.

Quality interactions over quantity.
I can't stress that enough.

If there is one thing I could wish for, it would be the following.

Please....
Be choosy with who you expose your puppy to.
Be particular.
.....and please stop letting your puppy meet every random person or dog they come across.

While I’m still waking up, my puppy’s already hard at work… on interior demolition. ☀️🐾

Here’s the thing: puppies aren’t being ‘naughty’ when they explode with energy first thing in the morning. Dogs are crepuscular, meaning their bodies are wired to be most active at dawn and dusk. That surge of activity is biology, not bad manners.

👉 The fix? Plan for it! A short play session, a sniffy walk, or a quick round of training can channel that morning burst into something positive and set your pup up for a calmer rest of the day.

I am vibrating with excitement. I have found a venue to host group classes. I just passed my licensing exams for instructing and assessing the Pet Dog Ambassador ( https://www.petprofessionalguild.com/programs/pet-dog-ambassador ) program that my classes will be structured on. There are still some things to check off the list before it's Go Time, but It's HAPPENING!

Dog Training Game Changer: Avoid This Common Mistake!

"Please hold....📞☎
Your play request is important to us and has been noted and placed in the queue.
Expected wait time.... 3- 5 seconds, 3–5 minutes or 3–5 days, maybe never… we’re not sure yet.
Rest assured your play ticket is pending further assessment and if approved by both myself and the Department of Zoomies ... it will be acted upon accordingly"

🎯 One Frisbee. Two Dogs. Zero Peace. 🐾

What happens when your fun game of fetch turns into growls, frisbee theft, and stink-eye standoffs?

Welcome to the world of multi-dog resource guarding, and yes, it can happen even in the best of dog friendships. Not all resource guarding involves aggression or fights, but we certainly don't want it to escalate to that level!

In my latest blog, I take you inside my own home where Cha-cha (my high-octane Toller) kept swiping the frisbee right out of Zydeco’s mouth.

Instead of harsh corrections or giving up on fetch, I used a step-by-step, science-backed plan to:
✅ Stop stealing before it starts
✅ Teach turn-taking
✅ Build a “Leave it” cue that actually works mid-chase
✅ Give my high-energy dog an “off switch”
✅ Keep consequences fair and stress low

Now? Two dogs. One game. All smiles. 🥏🐕🐕
