๐ŸŽฏ Fi****ms Season Opens Tomorrow, November 15th, 2025 โ€” Good Luck, Indiana Hunters!

As we head into another opening weekend, Summitt Hill Taxidermy wants to wish everyone a safe, successful, and fun few days in the woods.

๐Ÿฆบ 1. Safety First
Know your target, know whatโ€™s behind it, wear your orange, and come home safe. Nothing matters more.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ 2. Bring the Kids Along
Some of our best memories since opening in 1988 have come from families sharing the hunt together. Whether they harvest a deer or just enjoy the sunrise, those moments matter.

๐Ÿ˜Š 3. Keep Hunting Fun
Donโ€™t stress over score sheets, trail-cam comparisons, or what other people are posting. Your hunt is your story. Every deer is a trophy when the experience is meaningful.

If youโ€™re fortunate enough to fill a tag this weekend, weโ€™d be honored to help preserve the memory.

Here's an impressive archery deer about to go home. What do think it will score?

(Please excuse the black ear from the Sable. This time of year we tend to get a little crowded.)

We are often asked by customers how old we think their deer may be. In most cases, this is before we have ever really put our hands on the deer, so we give it our best guess based on what we can see. This usually leads to some friendly banter with the customer as we either agree or disagree. While this is always fun, the truth is that aging a deer is tough. Especially when you are simply looking at the antlers and a few body characteristics. When we offer a guess at the age of a deer, it is just a guess. Handling several thousand deer over the course of 30+ years in business has given us more experience than most folks have, but we are still guessing too.

Once the customer is gone and we have time to process the deer we are now given access to another bit of information. The thickness of the skull plate. This is only seen after the antlers have been removed from the rest of the body. While this information is not a perfect piece evidence that can be used to determine age, it is a pretty valuable clue.

The pictures are of two deer that came in over the weekend. The first is of a deer that is almost assuredly is a 1.5 year old. Note how thin the bone is next to the penny. Then look at the other photo. This is the skull plate from a much older deer. The bone on the second deer is more than twice as thick as that of the younger deer.

While the bone thickness does not give us an exact age, (cementum annuli aging is your best bet at getting an exact age) it is a big clue in determining the age of a deer. It is also a great tool to compare the ages of different deer.

The folks at Summitt Hill Taxidermy want to wish all of you a safe and fun beginning to the Indiana Firearm Season. If you are not out already, hopefully you can make it out soon. When you get out, if you can, take a camera and a kid with you. You never know what kind of opportunity the two of you may encounter. If you have a picture of your deer, feel free to post it. Better yet, if you have a photo of a young hunter with a toothy smile, post that too.

If you find yourself with a deer and you are thinking about having a mount done, please give us a call. We would love to hear from you and enjoy helping you prolong your memory. We offer lots of options and provide a fast return on your animal. In closing we ask that you try to be safe, be smart, be courteous, and enjoy the experience.

We have added several new animals to the show room. Can you name them all?

A couple more impressive Indiana whitetails about to head home.

Aside from a couple deer that we have received in the last few weeks, all of the nearly 100 deer brought into Summitt Hill Taxidermy have either went home or will be ready to be picked up early this week. A fast turnaround time has been a point of emphasis for us since our beginning in 1988. It has served us and our customers well.
