As the official charity partner for this event, we get a $50 donation for each volunteer if we fill all the volunteer slots or a $40 donation per volunteer if we can’t fill all of them. Since we just took in 3 sick kittens two days ago, had a fourth dumped last night and we’re expecting 3 more in the next few days, we are strongly relying on filling all the volunteer slots to get the most funding for these new kitties. Lately we’ve been getting dozens of calls and surrender requests per week and, more often than not, people are unfortunately frustrated with us when we have to say no to a request. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes for each new intake and we want to use this opportunity to show you the full process from start to finish. The picture you see here is a result of roughly one week of work.
The feeder for this colony noticed that there was a mama cat who had kittens so she informed us and we started guiding her on how to trap train them so we can catch them.
This is a bit complicated in a colony setting like this one since you are just trying to focus on the handful of cats that aren’t fixed right now. She had to strategically select the location she’d be trap training them, setup the traps and commit to baiting the traps every single day at around the same time so they get used to going in and out of the traps without them getting set off. Now that they’re trap trained, we are moving on to the next step which is securing spay/neuter appointments for everyone. Mama cat will get fixed at the feral cat coalition but we intend to keep and socialize the kittens so all three of their medical bills are coming out of our funds. 3 kittens may not sound like a lot but each kitten costs at least $200 for just their basic medical work. This is why, as much as we’d love to, we can’t say yes to every single surrender form or request for help with trapping strays. We are a very small team and it takes a lot of work to get all these cats cared for.
So, if you’ve submitted a request that we haven’t responded to or had to deny, I promise you it’s not just because we “didn’t want to” or we’re “ignoring your request”. We are drowning in dozens of requests just like yours and we have to pick and choose what requests we have the time and resources to accept.
We will be using this specific case to show the step by step process we go through with each new intake so stay tuned to see what we do after trap training everyone!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with our organization, hi! We are Paws and Pumpkins Rescue. We are the only nonprofit cat rescue in Polk County and we have been working hard for the past two years we’ve been in business to provide as much help to the animals of this community as we possibly can. The entire rescue is run by me (the owner) and my two board members with the help of our occasional volunteers so we do our best with such a small team. The animal rescue world is often a thankless one but we have fortunately been blessed by an amazing, supportive community that sees the good we do and backs us every step of the way. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supports our organization and the amazing work we do here. We love our small community and we are so grateful that you love us back!

We’re just going to leave this here for everyone trying to claim we never attempted to scan him for a microchip. The owner went straight from commenting on our posts to calling the police after we didn’t answer one phone call (because nobody was at the rescue to answer the phone). The police agreed that we were just doing our job as a rescue organization so they dropped the investigation. We will be filing restraining orders against everyone who threatened to come storm into the shop and harass my staff. I will defend my staff and my volunteers no matter what. I side with them every time. I do not tolerate anyone disrespecting them or threatening them. Thank you to everyone who saw that we tried to do the right thing and just got caught up with some bad people. We love and appreciate all of you who support us!

We got this cat not even an hour ago and oh boy are we in a pickle now! This cat is very emaciated, missing patches of fur all over, has something wrong with its hip (potentially dislocated or broken) and a scab down its face. We simply don’t have the funds to get this cat everything it needs but I can tell it still has plenty of fight left in it. We never want money to be the reason that stands between a cat and the medical care it deserves so if you are able to donate, we are trying to raise $1,000 to get this cat all the care it needs (assuming it needs a surgery to fix its hip).
