This is crazy! End of October and more green grass than we had in July! Cows are loving it!

We have always known Gelbvieh females are the best and now this new study proves it! On that note, we are selling around 30 cows (4-9 years old) next month in La Junta. We just have gotten too many numbers and need to cut back. I’ll post more later.

At a market price of $4.50 per pound on five-weight steers with a 22.7 pound weaning weight advantage, Gelbvieh females would generate an additional $102.15 in revenue per calf.

It’s that time of year - posting pictures of the heifers on their way to the west pasture for a few months! Another great set!

We got the registered calves weaned and turned the bulls out to a bunk line of feed. They went straight to it, which was great! But the heifers were still in the pen and were quite jealous!

Like so many of you, it was a rough summer. We were feeding up until the first week of August, when we finally got rain. A few small showers in July had, thankfully, kept the grass from going dormant. So, with the grass “poised” and 90+ degree days, we could almost see the grass grow. We now have winter feed and the calves have made some major strides! So very thankful.

"USMARC just released new research regarding breed-specific heterosis for growth and carcass traits in 18 United States cattle breeds, and Gelbvieh-sired females were the only Bos ta**us females with a maternal weaning weight advantage. The data revealed that Gelbvieh-influenced females had a maternal weaning weight advantage of 22.7 pounds."

Read "Made to Mother" in the September issue of The Profit Picture to learn why data continues to prove Gelbvieh is the maternal breed of choice, available at https://gelbvieh.org/news/publications/profit-picture.

On our way to the CGA meeting on Saturday morning, this was in our west pasture! This is a not a normal thing to see, but with the drought in the mountains, the bears and other animals are hungry and definitely expanding their range! But he does look to be pretty good shape so hoping he’s find lots to eat - preferably prairie dogs! Nancy Stroder Wilkinson. The Gelbvieh Association of Colorado - CGA Sydney Wilkinson

It’s been “one of those summers,” but we have had some rain - finally! Grass is greening up and starting to see some growth. Meanwhile, we are still feeding and moving cattle regularly. In a normal summer with good grazing, they would turn up their nose to protein cake. But, they still come to that cake wagon when it shows up!

Selling our old international 5088 tractor. It still runs, has a new PTO, decent tires. Asking $3000. (Located between La Junta and Trinidad)

It’s always amazing what you can see at times! We often see ducks but never one all by itself, seemingly completely content, swimming around a stock tank!
