Hey Bloomington and beyond,

It was day one of our fee-waived dog adoption promo and we are very much hoping for a stronger report card tomorrow.

Today:

5 dogs came in.
More are already scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

The math is not mathing in our favor.

Right now, our shelter is incredibly full and we urgently need adopters. We have so many good dogs waiting to graduate from shelter life and head into homes of their own.

In the study, anxious dogs were given the medicinal mushroom Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) at a dose of 1000 mg per 10 kg of body weight (about 100 mg/kg) once daily for 28 days. This intervention led to a ~62% reduction in anxiety scores, with dogs improving to the point where they were no longer statistically different from healthy controls.

For families who cannot source Lion’s Mane, research suggests probiotics may offer a powerful alternative.

A 2025 peer-reviewed study published in the journal Animals (MDPI) found the probiotic strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LP815ā„¢ naturally produces GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a neurotransmitter that helps calm the nervous system by regulating nerve activity. Unlike traditional calming supplements, LP815 works through the gut–brain axis to support more lasting, natural calming effects.

LP815 clinical results in dogs (after 4 weeks):
• Reduced fear- and noise-related aggression
• More restful, consistent sleep
• Improved mood and reduced reactivity
• Better energy and emotional balance
• Faster settling after owner departure

That’s why when developed her one-of-a-kind canine probiotic, she included Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LP815ā„¢ in PRIMITIVE PROBIOTICS™—a science-driven approach to rebuilding and maintaining your dog’s microbiome using strains inspired by wild canids, healthy domestic dogs, and living soil.

🧠 Epilepsy and the gut in dogs

Dogs with epilepsy often show differences in their gut microbiome compared to healthy dogs. This imbalance, known as dysbiosis, may contribute to seizure activity.

How does the gut influence seizures? Gut bacteria can affect neurotransmitters like GABA and serotonin, which regulate brain excitability. An imbalanced microbiome may also increase systemic inflammation, which is linked to a lower seizure threshold. In addition, beneficial gut bacteria produce short chain fatty acids that may help protect brain cells and stabilize neural signaling.

Early studies suggest that probiotics may help reduce seizure frequency or severity in some dogs. Diets that shift the microbiome, including ketogenic style approaches, may also support seizure control. Gut targeted therapies are being explored as potential add ons to standard epilepsy treatment.

In fact, a recent 2025 peer reviewed study in Research in Veterinary Science (Elsevier) found that probiotic supplementation was associated with lower seizure frequency in dogs, adding to growing evidence for this approach. Overall, benefits appear most promising with multi strain Lactobacillus blends rather than single strains, likely through broader gut–brain axis effects.

Scientists have uncovered a potential explanation for why some dogs experience seizures and other neurological issues after taking common flea and tick medications like Bravecto, NexGard, Credelio, Simparica, and Revolution. Real-world reports show that certain dogs, especially puppies, older dogs, or those with genetic vulnerabilities, can develop tremors, seizures, or other nervous system problems. The study suggests that these drugs may reach the brain through a ā€œback doorā€ pathway called centripetal (retrograde) axonal transport, bypassing the usual protective blood brain barrier. Additionally, certain chemical additives in the medications, such as PFAS compounds, may increase this risk by helping the drugs enter nerve cells or acting as neurotoxic agents themselves. Overall, this research highlights a previously underappreciated nerve pathway that could explain why some dogs are more susceptible to neurological side effects from flea and tick treatments.
