After many weeks of strange and heartbreaking behavior, we finally know what’s been causing it. 💔

Addison’s Disease

I’m crushed to hear this news, but at least we finally know what’s going on and how to treat it. Fingers crossed we can get this under control, so Leo can live a long and happy life. The last month or so has been brutal for both of us. 💔

Addison’s disease in dogs, also known as hypoadrenocorticism, is a serious but treatable condition where the adrenal glands don’t produce enough hormones, particularly cortisol and aldosterone. These hormones are essential for regulating many body functions, including metabolism, stress response, and electrolyte balance.

📌 Causes:
• Autoimmune disorder (most common): the immune system attacks the adrenal glands.
• Infections or trauma affecting the adrenal glands.
• Sudden withdrawal of long-term steroid use.
• Cancer or tumors.

🐾 Common Symptoms:

Addison’s is often called “the great pretender” because its symptoms mimic other conditions:
• Lethargy or depression
• Vomiting and diarrhea
• Weight loss
• Loss of appetite
• Shaking or muscle weakness
• Dehydration
• Low heart rate
• Collapse or shock (Addisonian crisis — a life-threatening emergency)
