Someone recently said they were tired all the time because they had two young dogs that didn’t let him sleep. I’ve always had rambunctious dogs, and these tips keep me sane and rested. If we’re tired all the time, we can’t enjoy our dogs, right? In my current pack, I have three dogs: two shepherds and a very energetic pitbull. I’ve always had at least three dogs, because I like a Pack. Three are as easy as one, if you know how to manage them.
1) I bought a crate in my bedroom for my youngest pup. He took to it just fine and couldn’t rabble rouse the others. The older ones sleep on dog pillows in my room. 2) I have a coke can with quarters in it on my bed, so if they jump on the bed and try to play on my prone body, I just shake it once or twice. It’s the only time I use it, because 130 pounds of dog on your head and face can be dangerous. Since I rarely use it, they respect it. 3) I have 3 crates in the den where I spend most of my time. They all chill when I’m doing yoga or need them contained. (E.g. I’m on a Zoom call, the Gardner is here, or an elderly person is visiting me) They all love their crates because they learned it is a positive experience to be in them, with treats like bully sticks, greenies, and Kongs, or even their dinner. 4) Once in a while I’ll take them to doggie daycare for the day so they can play their little hearts out and come home tired. 4) I like short getaways and have a Dogsitter stay with them. She’s awesome and takes them hiking and even skateboards with them. It’s nice to sleep in with no dogs! Or, I take them to a boarding facility where they’re cage free, except to sleep. I think it’s good to have these options so we don’t feel tied down by our pets. Plus being apart makes us miss them! 5) I sometimes crawl back into bed after I let them out to potty in the early morning, because I just don’t want to start the day yet. Believe it or not, they’ve learned to chill while I get a few extra winks. The Coke can helps them know Mom is tired and they need to chill a bit. They usually fall back to sleep themselves. We need to take care of ourselves and be well rested, so we can better take care of our pups, and enjoy them fully.
