🐾 Saturday Shout-Out! 💙

A big thank you to these amazing volunteers from Better World Books for spending time with us at the shelter recently!

Their team brought plenty of energy and enthusiasm while helping tackle important projects around the shelter, including removing several trees that needed to come down. And, of course, they made time for the most important task of all: kitten snuggles! 🐱❤️

We're so grateful for your continued support and always enjoy having your team visit. Thank you for helping make a difference for the animals in our care!

We're excited to be part of this year's Rebel Art Fest!

Join us this Sunday, June 7, at Potawatomi Park as artists and animal lovers come together to support the Humane Society of St. Joseph County.

From 12–3 PM, we'll have adoptable dogs onsite serving as inspiration for artists creating one-of-a-kind pet portraits. Be sure to stop by our booth to check out artwork created by shelter pets, pick up some fun giveaway items, and learn more about our programs and services.

It's a great opportunity to enjoy local art, meet some amazing dogs, and support animals in need. We hope to see you there!

Wildlife baby season is in full swing!

Each spring and summer, wild animals are busy raising their young. That’s why it’s so important to avoid trapping or relocating wildlife during this time of year.

While nuisance wildlife situations can be frustrating, trapping a mother animal during baby season can leave entire litters orphaned with little chance of survival. Young wildlife rely completely on their mothers for warmth, protection, and food. Removing mom can unintentionally lead to starvation, stress, and suffering for both the babies and the adult animal.

Many species, including raccoons, squirrels, skunks, opossums, and groundhogs, may currently have babies depending on the season. Before taking action, we encourage homeowners to explore humane deterrent methods and prevention techniques whenever possible.

If you’re dealing with wildlife on your property:

• Avoid trapping during baby season
• Check carefully for nests or young animals
• Use humane exclusion and deterrent methods
• Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or professional for guidance if needed

Compassionate coexistence helps protect local wildlife families while keeping our communities safe.

💙 Thankful Thursday 💙

This week, we're giving a special shout-out to one of our amazing volunteers, Gretchen!

If you've visited the shelter over the last few months, you've probably noticed the eye-catching banners displayed in our lobby promoting our adoption specials. Gretchen generously donates her time and creativity to design these custom pieces, helping our adoptable pets get the attention they deserve.

Earlier this week, she delivered this fun summer-themed banner for our Road Trip Ready adoption promotion, where all dogs and cats over 6 months old are just $25 throughout June!

We're incredibly grateful for Gretchen's continued support and for sharing her talents to help more pets find loving homes. Volunteers like her make a real difference for the animals in our care.

If you'd like to see more of Gretchen's work, check out her page at www.facebook.com/ghensleydesigns.

Thank you, Gretchen, for everything you do for our shelter pets! 🐾

🐾 Ichabod's Doggy Day Out 🐾

Meet Ichabod Crane! This goofy, lovable pup came to us as a stray last September and has been keeping staff and volunteers entertained with his big personality ever since. At not quite 2 years old, Ichabod is still full of youthful energy and curiosity. After spending so many months growing up in the shelter, he was definitely ready for a change of scenery.

Thankfully, one of our dedicated dog volunteers recently treated him to a much-needed Doggy Day Out!

Ichabod spent the day relaxing at the volunteer's home, enjoying neighborhood walks, playing with plenty of toys, and even getting spoiled with a pup cup.

"He was a super good boy," the volunteer shared. "He did really good meeting other people and didn't even care when he saw a cat. While he wasn't sure about the car, he enjoyed spending the day with lots of playtime and a nice nap on the couch."

These outings are so valuable for our long-term shelter dogs. They provide mental stimulation, reduce stress, and give dogs a chance to show off how they behave outside the shelter environment.

As much as Ichabod enjoyed his special day, what he really needs is a family of his own.

Thanks to our "Summer Road Trip Ready" adoption special, Ichabod's adoption fee is just $25 throughout June. He's ready to trade shelter life for adventures, couch naps, and a forever co-pilot.

Could that be with you?

🐾 Free Microchip Clinic at Paws at the Hall! 🐾

One of the simplest ways to protect your pet is by making sure they have a microchip. Collars and tags can fall off, but a registered microchip provides a permanent form of identification that can help reunite lost pets with their families.

As part of the upcoming Paws at the Hall, we're offering a FREE microchip clinic for dogs and cats!

Hosted by International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 153, in partnership with the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, Paws at the Hall is an afternoon of family-friendly fun for dog lovers and their pups.

📅 Saturday, June 13
⏰ 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
📍 IBEW Local 153, 56475 Peppermint Road, South Bend

Pre-registration for microchips is encouraged:

Other highlights of this fun, family event include:

• Dog costume contest at 3 PM
• Dog agility course
• Pet-themed vendors
• Meet a few of our adoptable dogs

Admission is just a $10 donation per family, with proceeds benefiting the Humane Society of St. Joseph County and the animals in our care.

Bring your family, bring your pup, and help us spread the word about this great community event. We hope to see you there!

A big thank you to Tire Rack for inviting us to participate in their Employee Wellness Fair last week!

We had a wonderful time connecting with employees and fellow community organizations while sharing information about our mission and the animals in our care.

Our adoptable pets, Nicktoons and Sakura, were great ambassadors for the shelter and enjoyed meeting everyone who stopped by. We're especially excited to share that Nicktoons has since found his forever home!

Sakura is still searching for her perfect match, and there’s never been a better time to meet her. As part of our Summer Road Trip Ready adoption special, her adoption fee is just $25 throughout the month of June.

We're grateful for community partners like Tire Rack who help us spread awareness about animal welfare and connect more pets with loving families. Thank you for helping us make a difference for the animals who need us most! 🐾❤️
