Brisket is here for a weekend of training!
He’s done a couple of these training weekends over the past few months, but this time he’s working on some more advanced skills 🐾

Brisket has mastered all of the basics, so now we are switching gears to more advanced training! He’ll be learning command duration and off leash reliability with the help of an Ecollar. We will also be able to correct any unwanted behaviors with this training tool.

I’m so excited to help Brisket learn some new skills and coach his owners along the way 🧡

Luring 🦴

The term ‘luring’ refers to the use of food or treats to guide your dog into a certain position.
Luring is one of the very first things I do with any dog. Even before I start teaching obedience commands, I am luring to teach muscle memory!

What you’ll need:
-A leashed, hungry puppy
-Lots of kibble or high value treats
-Your marker of choice (“yes” or clicker)

1. Grab a handful of kibble or treats and use your thumb to create a barrier between your puppy’s mouth and the treats

2. Take your handful of treats up to your puppy’s nose and slowly move your hand in different directions. If your puppy follows your hand around, mark and reward them

3. Once you are able to consistently lure your puppy in different directions, start luring them into different positions.
-Sit: lure head up, mark and reward once their butt hits the ground. Avoid saying “sit”. Focus on teaching your puppy how to sit before you throw a command at them
-Down: lure head to floor and be patient, mark and reward once their elbows and butt are down. Avoid saying “down” until your puppy is consistently being lured with ease.

Luring is a great way to build engagement and bond with your puppy!

💫Day Training Student Spotlight💫

Duke is one of the pups in my Day Training program. He has been coming to school for a few months now and has made tons of progress!

He has mastered basic obedience commands and is now working on loose leash walking skills, command duration, and off leash reliability 🐾 Duke has also worked on keeping his feet on the floor when greeting people, tolerating nail trims, and remaining neutral around other dogs!

Duke is such a good boy and I’m so excited to continue working with him as he transitions into some more advanced training 🧡

Genetics matter 🧬

Genetics play a huge role in puppy instincts and tendencies! Every dog has an original breed purpose and even if they aren’t used for that purpose anymore, the genes are still there!

For example, Quack is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. They were bred to toll and retrieve ducks, so naturally Quack loves to retrieve things for me. He picks up anything and everything!
Because Quack loves to retrieve, I give him things he can retrieve and reward him for that. Giving him an outlet for his natural instincts 🪶

I encourage you to do some research about your dog’s breed! See what they were originally bred for and if you notice that behavior showing, give you dog a safe outlet.
If your herding dog is nipping at ankles, maybe look into a herding ball 🎾
If your retriever is picking up random objects, maybe give them something safe to retrieve like a toy or bumper 🦆
If your scent hound can’t keep their nose off of the ground, maybe play some scent games 👃
If your sight hound wants to chase, maybe play with a flirt pole 🎣
If your terrier is digging up your yard, maybe give them a sandbox to dig in 🪏

Instead of immediately correcting your dog, try giving them an outlet for their breed specific needs! This will fulfill them physically and mentally. Which may also help with excess unwanted behaviors in your home!

Dapper and Quack took on Lowe’s this morning 🪚 I brought these two out to work on a few different things!

Dapper worked on command duration around distractions and neutrality around people 🐩 He absolutely loves everyone and has a hard time ignoring people who pass by. Dapper did a great job of holding his commands in a different environment with tons of distractions! He also used every ounce of self control and ignored everyone in the store!

Quack had a successful socialization outing 🦆 He got to experience walking through automatic doors, observe people passing by, navigate around shopping carts, and had some positive interactions with Halloween decorations! Quack did a great job of staying focused on me and was quick to recover if anything spooked him!

NOW OFFERING
🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Slatmill Sessions!!

A slatmill is a dog powered treadmill allowing your dog to run at their own pace. Slatmill sessions are a great way to build endurance, boost confidence, and provide mental stimulation. They are also an awesome way to exercise your dog when the weather isn’t suitable for walks 🐾

Slatmill sessions can be added on to any Boarding or Training days or the slatmill can be rented for private use!
If your dog has never been on a slatmill, the ‘For Starters’ package will be a requirement. This is to ensure your dog has a positive and safe introduction. Please reach out if you wish to schedule an appointment!

*The slatmill is not suitable for every size of dog. Due to this being a dog powered treadmill, the dog must weigh enough to make the slats move. When scheduling, please provide your dog’s breed and approximate weight!*
**Harnesses are provided, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer:)

See comments for photos of the slatmill in action!

Meet Maisie!
Maisie is searching for a new place to call home 🏠 She is a 6 year old, very active, Australian Shepherd.

Maisie would do best in a home with no young children. She is a super sweet girl, but can have some anxious tendencies if she is not fulfilled. Because of this, she will need an active family. Maisie would also do well in a sport home! She loves dock diving and I could see her being successful in agility or rally as well 🐾

Maisie will be staying with me until she finds the perfect home. While she’s here, we will be working on some basic obedience skills- loose leash walking, recalls, and command duration- in hopes to give her the best chance for success with her new family!

Feel free to reach out with any questions or if you’d like to set up a meet and greet! Let’s find Maisie a home where she can thrive 💕

Using markers in your training ☑️

-What is a marker? A positive marker, whether a verbal “yes” or an audible ‘click’, is used to mark any good behaviors and let your pupppy know they did something right.

-When should I use a marker? Anytime your puppy offers a good behavior or does what you ask, mark it with a “yes” or ‘click’ from a clicker and reward your puppy.

-How do I introduce a marker to my puppy? Pick your positive marker of choice and be prepared with lots of food. Give your marker cue and quickly reward your puppy. Don’t give any commands or force your puppy into a certain position at this point. All I’m looking for is them to associate “yes” or ‘click’ with a food reward.

Right now, I am using a clicker with Quack as his marker. He understands that as soon as he hears the ‘click’, food is coming 🦴

Markers will be used all the time as you start working on obedience commands. A positive marker is a way to communicate with your dog that they did something right!
As you introduce a marker to your puppy, you may notice them offering behaviors to get a reward. (Ex: sitting instead of jumping). Make sure to mark and reward those offered behaviors!

Lainey is here for a weekend of training 🎀
She’s done a few training weekends over the past few months and we continue building on her skills each time!

This weekend, Lainey will get to head out on some outing to pet friendly public places! These outings will be a great way for Lainey to practice her obedience skills around distractions in new environments 🐾

Stay tuned for Lainey’s weekend adventures!
