The Auglaize County Humane Society is sponsoring their event again this year and we will be supporting them by matching their discount. If you are interested, you must have the $25 voucher from them on the day of surgery. These vouchers can be picked up during their regular hours of operation, and surgeries must be scheduled between February 28th and March 28. Call the office to schedule and let us know you'll be using a Spay Day voucher. It's for a good cause ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜บ

Look as this handsome face hiding this painful mouth. Not to be underestimated, tooth resorption is a painful, common dental ailment in cats. This condition starts when the body begins to break down a tooth at the gumline. As it progresses, more and more of the dentin is damaged until the pulp cavity (where the nerve and blood supply for the tooth is located) is exposed. The process will continue until the entire crown (visible part of the tooth) is diseased and breaks off, but the pain is excruciating for the cat. Changes in how your cat eats may be the only noted symptom - tilting the head to chew, dropping food, drooling- because cats are great at hiding illness. Extraction of the affected tooth is curative, but some cats will experience several affected teeth in their lifetime. The cat in this radiograph belongs to one of our employees. The only symptoms she noted was slight decrease in his appetite for a few days. The pink line indicate the gumline, the green arrow shows what a normal tooth edge should look like, and the red arrow highlights the defect in the dentin. The gray channel running through the middle of the tooth is the pulp cavity. This lesion had not yet reached the nerve. The tooth was extracted, along with 3 other teeth in his mouth with early stage lesions, and he recovered well and was eating normally again in no time ๐Ÿˆ

Slab fractures are a common tooth injury found in dogs. This is a trauma injury, usually caused by chewing on hard toys, bones, antlers, hooves, etc. If the fracture only involves the enamel (the outside coating) and dentin (the support structure of the tooth), the fractured piece is removed while the dog is under anesthesia, and we monitor. If the fracture extends into the pulp cavity (where the nerve and blood supply is found) the tooth is very painful and risk of infection in the surrounding bone is much higher, and in most cases the tooth is extracted.

So... how did brushing go? Everyone still have their fingers?
If you struck out this time, keep trying - practice makes perfect. In the meantime, there are dental chews, wipes, and water additives that can help. When searching for alternative dental care, look for the VOHC seal of approval. These items have been tested and proven to be beneficial in controlling plaque and tartar.
