Deer hunting season is over, but shed hunting season is on! 🦌
Each year, white-tailed bucks shed their antlers prior to spring. They'll regrow a new set over the summer.
Searching for their dropped antlers is called shed hunting!
🍂 Put your scouting skills to the test! Some of the best spots to find sheds are where deer are most active: heavily used trails, tree rubs and scrapes.
☀️ Antlers can also drop where deer are spending the most time. Southern-facing slopes that receive a good amount of sun are preferred bedding areas for bucks.
🐕 You'll need to cover a lot of ground shed hunting (good news for those with fitness New Year's resolutions). Teaming up with a dog is another way to put your companion to the test (and get them some exercise).
❌ Keep in mind shed hunting is not legal on some public lands — National Parks, Minnesota State Parks and Scientific & Natural Areas. Check your spot's restrictions before heading out.
Winter is a difficult time of year for deer, so make sure you're being respectful to the original owners of the antlers.
👌 Limit your visits to the same location.
🛑 Do not push animals (making them flee by pursuing them) and stay back if you see a deer.
🐾 Keep your dog on a leash to prevent them from chasing.
