Daphne is a 2 year old sweet girl that developed chest wall (rib) cancer. Today we removed a section of ribs to remove the tumor (visible as a bump in the shaved area here). Graphic video of the open chest once the section was removed in the comments. Photo of reconstructed chest before the muscle and skin were closed as well. The pink lungs can be seen inflating. The diaphragm is directly below the lungs.

ETA: The tumor biopsy showed that the mass was completely removed with great margins (no tumor likely left behind locally)! Unfortunately, the type of tumor is a primary bone tumor called osteosarcoma, which is very rare in this location. Osteosarcoma is a tumor that commonly spreads to other parts of the body. We are so happy that Daphne is still feeling fantastic, and hope she stays healthy for a long time!

This sweet old lady is Ally. We saw her a year ago, with a chronic Achilles tendon tear. Her repair came with significant risk of failure with her age and the length of time since the injury. Here she is at 13 1/2 years of age, 12 months out of surgery, and living her best life on the lake!

Vera could not walk this past fall. She had torn her left and right ACLs at the same time and needed help. We repaired both of them at the same time. Here she is playing with her buddy, happy and carefree!

Mister the cat had an elbow dislocation that we repaired 4 weeks ago. In addition to reconstruction of the main ligaments in the elbow, we put pins in above and below. Rubber bands were used to allow use of the elbow while maintaining stability.

We removed the pins (and the rubber bands 😂) this week. Feels fantastic. Normal ROM, very stable.

Here is the X-ray before the repair, the one right after repair, and picture of the repair. Also, a video of his elbow now.

Chalk had his elbow injected to help relieve arthritis pain today. “Didn’t hurt a bit!” he said.

Smushed face cats often have tiny nostrils. Since cats have no choice but to use their noses to breathe, Persians like Max often have tough lives. He was afraid to drink water or groom. We can fix that!!!

This poor little chihuahua jumped off the couch this morning and broke her radius and ulna bones. Thankfully, we were able to add her repair onto the end of our surgery schedule today. A bone plate and 7 screws later, she’s on the way to a great recovery.

Frankie came in today for his suture removal, 2 weeks after a lip reconstruction. He had a large tumor that required removal of the majority of his upper lip. Although he had a setback early on, a revision turned out perfectly. Dr. Hammel rotated much of his lower lip to cover the defect. Once the scabbing flakes off and his hair grows back, he will look totally normal!
