Just got confirmation that we can grow on our Seward city plot again this season. This will be the 8th season on this site! Crazy. We get water from the neighbor, and the house has turned over 3 times since I've been growing there. So each time I have to re-negotiate water, but the new neighbors seem great and willing to work with us and the property owners still don't have development plans, so we are good for 2025!
Here's a photo series of the evolution of the site. It had previously been 2 houses that burned down, and had been sitting vacant. I converted it into a growing site in 2018, and for the first 2 seasons grew mixed annuals. Since 2020 it has been our dahlia plot. The visual before and after of this work never gets old. Making something beautiful out of bare brown ground is a thrill I just keep chasing.
Big news for our Seward neighbors!! we're going to rotate the dahlias to Hudson this year and grow all mixed annuals at Seward again. Which I think will be kinda fun for the passerby's. Delphinium, zinnias, asters, calendula and more!
We're rotating to alleviate some pest/disease pressure. The city plots are coveted real estate because they have far less environmental stressors (wind, storms, pests, frosts) and flowers just tend to grow better on the city plots. But I worry I'm pushing my luck with planting dahlias over and over in the same soil. And last year we had terrible aster yellows in Hudson, so we are moving some of those susceptible crops to Seward for the season and the dahlias are going to move out to Hudson for the year. So you can expect new views in the city!
