How has five years gone by so fast??
It was just yesterday she was a bouncing puppy with endless energy that made the EverReady Bunny look lazy.
Today she’s our full grown dog with a chill vibe but always up for a game of frisbee or a day on the lake.
As time marches on, just as Nelli was during my own cancer journey, Piper will be our support system as we navigate my father’s cancer journey. She has already proven herself to be the perfect mix of comfort and comedic relief at the perfect times.

Sooooo I’ve been a bit M.I.A lately, and I apologize for not being more present here. But I’ve actually been busy being in the present with my dad.
He’s beat cancer 3x. THREE! The last time was just over two years ago and it was a brutal treatment that took our family on quite a ride of emotions. We went from near death to “you beat it” in a matter of a few months. And at age 84, he was back on the golf course later that same year.
But here we are. Again. We know there’s no “beating it” this time around. Our high fives are because dad has enough energy for the grocery store. So we go. And I watch as he buys copious amounts of sugar in the form of ice cream (.drews_stl of course). He tried eating healthy with the previous cancer, so might as well go for sugar-overload this time.
This was during one of his treatments at Missouri Baptist Hospital’s Cancer Center. We met Louie the resident dog ~ who took to dad like Velcro. (They always know a dog lover). It was good to see dad smile and forget for just a moment about his cancer.
Dogs do that, though. It’s their inherent nature to ease our anxieties. Science has proven over and over those with dogs show lower stress or better stress management. Additionally, the feeling of being loved unconditionally eases loneliness; the sense of purpose that comes from dog ownership brings with it greater joy in one’s overall life.
So it’s no wonder so many dogs have found employment in hospitals, retirement ands assisted living communities.
We don’t know how much time dad has left, and while he can be short with us at times (cancer talking), it’s nothing but pure joy to see that frustration turn to a genuine moment of happiness.

I recently decided to do a little redecorating and sold an old chair. I moved Piper’s bed into the space and she seems to love it there more than the corner it was in. But now I’m also looking at outlets…..I hate outlets.
So do I get dog bed with a higher back?
Just live with the outlets?
Move her bed back to the corner so I can put a new chair there?

Guess who turned 4 today…..
…..and ironically got sick 4 times. It’s been a ride this year with this one, and her inflammatory bowel disease. When you adopt or rescue, you know it’s going to be a lot of great ups and (hopefully) few downs. And while those down times are heartbreaking, the ups feel so much sweeter.
Despite today, she’s been doing great these past few months. Thanks to the team we have our pupper Piper back.
The Piper who carries more than one toy at any given time. The Piper who sneak-attacks kisses and snuggles.
The Piper who can’t bother to put down her monkey to bark at our latest delivery person.
The Piper who sleeps with her monkey ~ in her mouth.
The Piper who idolizes the mailman the same way many idolize
Happy birthday, Piper, our PeeWee, our Peanut, our Piper-roni. Cheers, wags and high five to many many more 🙌
